ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION: This position is located within the Great Plains Area IHS. There MAY NOT be immediate vacancies at all locations. Interested applicants should check with the local Administrative Office concerning immediate employment needs. Positions may also be filled at other IHS locations including the Great Plains Area Office and Tribe Organizations as vacancies occur.
The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive care to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients within the Great Plains Area.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
EDUCATION: Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school.
AND
LICENSURE: Applicants must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.
NOTE: Applicants who meet the basic requirements qualify for GS-11 grade level.
AND
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS for GS-12: For purposes of this standard, the following terms are defined.
Approved Internship/Approved Residency: Training in a hospital dental internship or residency approved by the Council on Dental Education of the ADA.
Graduate-Level Study: Either Dental Graduate study leading to an advanced degree such as a Masters of Science, or post-graduate degree (non-degree) dental study involving a level of instruction comparable to that provided in a graduated degree program.
National Certifying Board: An examining board in a special area of dental practice recognized by the Council on Dental Education of the ADA.
Board Eligibility: Qualification for examination by a National Certifying Board as a result of having met the advanced training program requirements for a Dental Specialty.
Experience and/or training must be one of the following types :
1.) Post-licensure professional experience in the general practice of dentistry
2.) Approved internship or residency training.
3.) Graduate-level study in an accredited dental school.
4.) Post-licensure professional experience in a specialized area of practice.
5.) Other advanced study or training (outside a dental school or hospital) creditable towards satisfaction of training program requirements for Board eligibility.
FOR SPECIALIST POSITIONS:Experience and/or training must clearly establish the applicant's status as a specialist. Agencies should review the applicant's experience to determine the types and difficulty of the cases dealt with, the level of knowledge and understanding of the specialization regularly required, the degree of diagnostic skills and treatment planning ability involved and the pertinent graduate study acquired.
GS-12: Two (2) years of professional dentistry experience and/or training; or superior academic ability defined as that demonstrated by an intern, who on the basis of an evaluation of all interns who have completed training in the same hospital or in the same kind of internship program over the past five (5) years, would fall into the upper half of the group.
Experience: is defined as, work concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries and deformities of the teeth, the jaws, organs of the mouth, and other structures and connective tissues associated with the oral cavity.
FOR SUPERVISORY POSITIONS: Experience leader or Supervisor of a Dental Department by assigning and evaluating
work. Experience evaluating performance and conduct and knowledge of creating a work schedule.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants MUST be able to distinguish shades of color.
Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
