Summary

This position is located in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the largest national museum for the study and exhibition of African American history and culture. Its primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States related to the African American experience; to conduct scholarly research designed to make significant contributions to the body of knowledge in the field of African American history, to publish findings for both scholarly and general audiences; and to interpret historical developments through public exhibits and programs as well as digital content.

Help

The Social Media Specialist will collaborate across all departments and is primarily responsible for developing, implementing and analyzing digital and social media in support of museum content, educational programs, audience engagement, and development goals, including:

  • executing digital, SMS, mobile and social media strategy through extensive research, social analytics, platform determination, benchmarking, and audience identification to ensure consistency and quality of content across all digital and social media platforms;
  • developing social media strategies, managing social media sites, executing social media campaigns, and playing a major role in engaging and educating online and live audiences;
  • extending the reach of onsite programming to national and international audiences via digital offerings;
  • attending public, educator, teen, and early learning programs to engage audiences via social media with museum, exhibitions, educational content, and where appropriate interactive development;
  • planning and conducting ongoing online and live sessions about identity, race and social justice; and
  • conducting, Tweetups, InstaMeets, Google Hangouts, and other digital learning sessions.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as: demonstrated experience researching, analyzing and applying established best practices in social media for a museum, educational or cultural institution, with a focus on African American History and/or Culture to integrate social platforms, media, and other networking tools into an organization’s existing communication strategies. Examples may include effective use of social media as part of strategic communications within an organization, as well as assisting in the development and delivery of social media policies, practices, guides or tools for training and awareness for employees and managers.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  2. Ability to manage multiple social media platforms in order to create, update and monitor an organization’s outreach efforts through social media.

  4. Ability to plan and conduct sessions about African American history and culture, race, and identity.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points, but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each quality category. The Hiring Manager may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
