Help

You will:

- Serve as the technical authority for ecological simulation models and provide technical support on special projects and/or technology transfer activities;

- Design and develop computer software modules and applications, particularly mechanistic simulation models of environmental and ecological systems;

- Provide consultation for other scientists, within and outside the Agency, who may require information on research activities, technical reference materials, or Agency approved guidelines and methodology;

- Collaborate with research teams on presentation of results of work in informal reports as well as in professional papers and journals.

This position is designated as Low Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

Qualifications

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

You must have either a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as analyzing and assessing environmental and/or scientific information, and developing software incorporating that information into web-based or desktop applications; - OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the academic discipline as described above.

Your answers to the on-line assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Knowledge of the science underlying estuarine, freshwater and/or terrestrial ecosystems; 2) Skill in coding in both managed and/or unmanaged languages; 3) Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of computer science/engineering and software development; 4) Knowledge of scientific principles for creating or extending ecological simulation models; 5) Skill in using multiple Graphic User Interface development environments; 6) Skill in written communication; 7) Skill in oral communication.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
