-Coordinates design, fabrication, and
installation of physical and digital exhibits that explore the life and career
of the President and an ongoing series of special, changing exhibits that are
created in house or borrowed from another museum or cultural institution.
-Develops exhibits, taking part with a
team in substantive discussions regarding the content as well as the design of
the exhibition. Provides the team with expert guidance regarding the variety of
mediums and materials available to construct an exhibit that meets the
interpretive goals set for it. Makes the
initial decisions on such design matters as size, layout, kind and quality of
material, medium, color schemes, typography, lighting effects, specific visual
elements or materials to be incorporated.
-Oversees the work of museum
technicians, volunteers, and such contractors as cabinet-makers, painters,
electricians, electronics experts, etc., to fabricate and install various
components that together create the whole exhibit.
-Conducts detailed research into subject
matter of the exhibit to enhance design so that all aspects of the exhibition
work harmoniously together to convey the intended interpretive message. Researches and recommends still photographs
for inclusion in exhibits. Works with audiovisual staff to develop concise
video presentations for particular exhibits.
-Secures the loan of outside artifacts
and other materials for inclusion in Library exhibits.
-Assists the Museum Curator in locating
available traveling exhibits and provides advice and conceptual sketches upon
which a decision can be based as to whether a particular show will work for the
Library given available space.
-Assists in pre-exhibit evaluation of
exhibit components to make sure that any given exhibit will be understood and
appreciated by the visiting public, meeting the goals set for it. Writes text for and works with printers and
graphic designers to create informational brochures.

Qualifications
GS-11 -
Candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to
the GS-09 (or higher) level of Federal service coordinating the design,
fabrication, and installation of physical and digital (e.g., online,
interactive, web based) exhibits; designing floor plans, models, and diagrams
for exhibits, making decisions on such design matters as size, layout, kind and
quality of materials, medium, color schemes, typography, lighting effects,
specific visual elements or materials to be incorporated; experience in the
handling of original artifacts and records, creating simple exhibit mounts,
captions, design and fabrication of graphics, and other tasks associated with
maintenance of physical and digital exhibit installations; combining the text,
images, and artifacts to visually communicate the goals and stories online and
in person; and coordinating the work of museum technicians, web specialist,
public affairs specialist, volunteers, carpenters, painters, electricians,
electronics experts, and others involved in creating museum exhibits.
This includes work in the appropriate field, e.g., design, model-making, art, taxidermy, or restoration.
Education may be
substituted for experience.
For GS-11: Ph.D.
or equivalent doctor's degree or three full years of progressively higher level
graduate education from an accredited educational institution leading to such a
degree. Major study illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts,
industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields
related to the position.
Combination of
Experience and Education: a combination of experience and graduate level
education to meet the total requirements for this position (note: when added
together, the total of education and experience must equal 100%).
