The students selected for these opportunities will work with professionals and scientists performing non-clerical duties to gain experience in engineering and/or sciences. TheMine Electrical Systems Division provides electrical engineering services related to the safe use of electricity and electrical machinery during the extraction and processing of mineral resources. The technical work areas include: elevators, hoists, surface mining equipment controls, power electronics, computer control, communications, and power distribution. The Division engineers disseminate technical procedures for the safe use, installation, maintenance and testing of these electrical systems and equipment. The Division engineers develop specialized test equipment, devices, and instruments needed to make these evaluations. The Division engineers are currently researching and testing seismic instrumentation to detect the location of miners trapped underground during mine emergencies. The Mine Waste and Geotechnical Engineering Division provides technical services, consultation, and training to Federal and State mining officials, the mining industry, and others. The Division’s primary work is in the area of hazards associated with dam construction and operation and the integrity of natural and man-made embankments. Other work areas, which constitute a significant part of the Division’s work, include complex safety problems related to geotechnical issues, ground stability, surface haulage, structural safety, and mining near bodies of water. Applied research studies, site investigations, plan reviews, and in-depth engineering evaluations are made of conditions, practices, and engineering aspects involved in each of these areas.

Applicants for these positions must meet the definition of a CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENT as outlined several times throughout this vacancy.
