Help

As a Supervisory Geographer/Physical Scientist/Ecologist within the Earth Resource Observation and Science (EROS) Center, some of your specific duties will include:

Providing leadership, direction, and support to EROS scientists and support staff in defining, planning, staffing, budgeting for, and coordinating the implementation of integrated multidisciplinary remote sensing and land change science programs aligned with Land Change Monitoring, Assessment and Projection (LCMAP), and the three science goals: 1. Improving global land change monitoring through remote sensing research, 2. Understanding the temporal and geographic dimensions of land change, and 3. Improving the understanding of the connections between climate and land change (e.g. land use, cover, and condition) and their combined impacts of human and natural systems.

Develops long-range and short-term plans regarding the land change science program's goals and objectives, technology development, staffing patterns, and budgetary support.

Responsible for the strategic planning, coordination and implementation of scientific partnerships with other Federal agencies, academic institutions and private sector groups interested in remote sensing and land change science.

Monitors and evaluates the research programs, documents the overall scientific merit of programs, and oversees the consistent application of the Department and Bureau policies regarding scientific integrity, safety, fair employment, equal opportunity and training.

Advises on national and international issues pertinent to managing aspects of the USGS mission.

USGS has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. The official worksite for the selectee is the duty location identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this location on a regular and recurring basis.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

This position requires completion of a one year supervisory/managerial probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-15 level:

For GS-0150: Examples of such experience may include: 1) Serving as a recognized authority that other senior technical experts in geography turn to for advice and counsel; 2) Planning, directing, and executing projects involving highly unstructured and interconnected geographic problems involving both difficult technology and complex human relations or programmatic issues; 3) Developing and coordinating major geographic projects and/or programs that have special significance for the success of the organization (i.e. a wide region or multiple program areas); 4) Serving as project manager for a new technology especially critical to the organization's programs.

For GS-1301: Examples of such experience could include investigations that involved highly unstructured problems involving both difficult technology and complex human relations or programmatic issues. The results of these investigations had significant effects over a wide region of the United States, or may have included responsibility for new technology especially critical to the organization's programs. This work involved other recognized senior technical experts asking the scientist for advice or counsel due to his/her personal reputation in the field.

For GS-0408: Examples of GS-14 level work may include: 1) Developing and managing major interdisciplinary projects that may impact regional scientific objectives; 2) developing or directly influencing the scientific, administrative and technical policies, standards, procedures, and instructions necessary for the effective direction and operation of a multi-discipline scientific program; 3) resolving critical problems resulting from the unprecedented complexities of a multi-discipline scientific study; 4) serving as the principal contact with other Federal agencies, state and local government organizations, and other groups that may affect the success of a major interdisciplinary scientific program. The work involved advising or counseling other recognized senior technical experts.
