This vacancy is for multiple Geographer positions in the Geography Division located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland.

This position is ELIGIBLE for telework; additional criteria will be required (e.g., supervisory approval).

Relocation expenses may be paid.

This is a NONBARGAINING unit position.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Basic Entry Requirements for All Grade Levels:

Degree: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

OR

Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience:

For GG-13, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal services. Experience for this position includes managing a project to define, collect, analyze, map, or update address, boundary, or street data for a national geographic database; obtaining available facts and presenting findings in narrative, graphic or statistical form; compiling and synthesizing geographic data as part of a study to determine locations of geographic features and changes in geographic areas and assembling such information for use on maps, charts, or in gazetteers; planning, researching, and implementing investigative projects requiring application of geographic relationships throughout the United States; making determinations regarding the significance of geographic relationships between features on the landscape and governmental unit, administrative, and statistical boundaries; analyzing data for geographic support and address list development/maintenance programs, including making recommendations to address problems.

Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level.

1. Minimum Requirements: Your application must show that you meet all requirements, including the education and/or experience required for this position. 2. Rating: Your application will be evaluated in the following areas. The following competencies are desirable at the full performance level of this position GG-13:
  • Knowledge of census and survey spatial programs and products
  • Knowledge of geographic management information systems
  • Ability to develop and apply geographic performance metrics
Your application will be rated based on the extent and quality of your experience, education, training relevant to the duties of this position.

3. Referral: If you are among the top qualified candidates, your application will be referred to a selecting official for consideration and possible interview. In addition, if you meet the minimum qualifications, we will compare the required documentation to your responses on the scored occupational questionnaire and place you in one of three pre-defined categories. These categories are "gold", "silver", and "bronze". Candidates placed in the "gold" category will be identified for referral to the hiring manager and may be invited for an interview.

Application of Veterans Preference: The Category Rating Method does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three," but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each pre-defined quality category.
