The Orlando VA Medical Center officially established in October 2006, the Orlando VA Medical Center is one of the Top 100 Companies in Central Florida for working families. The Orlando VA Medical Center includes the following facilities; a 120-bed Community Living Center and a 60-bed Residential Rehabilitation Program (located at the Lake Nona Campus), Outpatient Clinics in Orlando (Lake Baldwin), Viera and Daytona Beach and four Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Clermont, Kissimmee, Leesburg, and Orange City. Position Summary: The Orlando VA Medical Center is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to help us care for our veteran patients visiting the Viera Outpatient Clinic's Primary Care Teams. The LPN will be responsible for performing complex and supportive nursing and medical tasks necessary for the care of patients during visits to primary and/or specialty clinics. Duties include gathering patient information, including clinical reminders in our computerized medical record; obtaining EKGs; medication administration; patient/family education; wound care; assisting with surgical and/or specialized procedures; and other assigned duties. This LPN will report directly to the Nurse Manager, Viera Outpatient Clinic.
Work Schedule: Normal work days/hours will be Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with workday/hour flexibility required as patient care needs require.
The selectee may be required to work or travel between any of the locations within Corporate Orlando, including Lake Nona campus. The selectee may also be required to work various shift on a permanent or temporary basis, based on patient care needs.
Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-4: Six months of qualifying experience as a LPN or LVN; or Graduation from an approved school and one year experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures; or Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months in duration.
GS-5: Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems. Demonstrated ability to work as a responsible member of the nursing team and interact with patients, family members, professional and supportive personnel involved in patient care, and established customer care. Knowledge and skills sufficient to prepare, administer, and appropriately documentation taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous medications as permitted by approved local facility policies and procedures. Knowledge and ability to recognize the need for and to institute emergency measures when indicated, promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD, and assist in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest. Recognizes and appropriately responds to breakage/malfunction or loss of equipment, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies, promptly reporting to appropriate personnel for corrective action.
GS-6: Completion of one year of qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent. Technically proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations. Knowledge and ability to appropriately carry out assigned patient care based on the patients' conditions; to use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments; and to accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information. Ability to observe, identify and respond to the patient's needs for medication, equipment-assisted care patient/family education. Prepares and administers prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous) and performs treatments according to established policies/procedures. Knowledge and ability to recognize urgent and emergent patient care situations, seek assistance of the RN or MD, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed. Knowledge and understanding of or human behavior, patient motivation and reactions to situations, and ability to appropriately utilize this knowledge in working effectively with patients, family members, and staff. Knowledge and skill in performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include preparing the patients, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's conditions before, during, and following the procedure.
