The Apprentice Program provides a 4-year, combined work/study program, which prepares you for a career in an industrial trade through on-the-job learning and formal classroom instruction. The program requires that you complete classes from a local community college and complete required hours of work in the trade assigned. Upon graduation from the Apprentice Program, you will earn an Associate's Degree from an accredited educational institution and receive certificates from the U.S. Department of Labor and Department of Navy certifying your apprenticeship completion. As an apprentice, you will attend classes during regular work hours and your tuition will be paid by your employing activity. Your advancement in the Apprentice Program will be dependent upon successful completion of both the formal education and apprenticeship training in the assigned trade. These positions have promotion potential to the journey-level mechanic positions at the WG-10 or WG-11 level, depending on trade.
As an Apprentice in a training capacity, you will receive instruction under the program guidelines of the Apprenticeship Program. Your duties will include, but are not limited to:
· Receiving and performing shop assignments in the rudiments of trade tasks, technical shop subjects, and tools, equipment and materials of the trade
· Performing very elementary trade tasks under supervision of a shop instructor or artisan
· Performing other tasks incidental to the mastery of trade fundamentals

Marine Electrician Construct, remove/install, test, troubleshoot, maintain and repair various electrical wiring systems and components, electrical controls, electrically-operated equipment or instruments; light and heavy electrical machinery.
Electronics Mechanic Install, troubleshoot, repair and test shipboard electronic equipment and systems including radar, sonar, fire control, communications, and radio. Manufacture, repair, and test various sonar transducers and arrays.
Insulator Measure, fabricate, remove and install insulation materials on steam turbines, distillation plants, refrigeration plants, ventilation ducts, and other submarine or surface craft piping and component systems to prevent heat loss, to minimize condensation and protect personnel from extreme temperatures.
Machinist Manufacture and/or refurbish ship parts/components using machinery such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines, drilling presses, and computer numerical controlled machines.
Marine Machinery Mechanic Involves the use of the latest technology to install, remove, test, overhaul, and repair the main propulsion machinery, pumps, valves, steam turbines, engines, pumps, and propeller shafts on submarines and surface craft.
Pipefitter Remove, repair, install, test/flush, and silver braze piping to all propulsion, auxiliary, and weapons systems aboard submarines and surface craft. Manufacture, install, repair, maintain, and remove all ship-to-shore temporary piping services.
Rigger Select, install, and use cables, ropes and other weight handling gear to lift, move and position heavy loads in crane and critical rigging operations.
Welder Join and cut all types of industrial and marine metals using complex welding and thermal cutting processes during the overhaul, repair, and modernization of surface craft.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be 18 years of age by the start of employment date as Department of Labor Child Labor laws do not allow employment for those under age 18 in hazardous, industrial areas.
Selectees will be required to take a college placement test to determine the appropriate math and English classes as part of the pre-employment process. Further information will be provided to those selected.
A security clearance is a requirement of this position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a position offer or removal. If you possess a security clearance, please indicate the level and termination date in your resume.
Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test may be required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the applicant fails to report to the scheduled drug test appointment. Work is performed indoors, outside, and aboard ships or submarines, and may be under adverse weather conditions. Work conditions may involve, but are not limited to: dust, dirt, vibrations, loud noise, poor ventilation, poor illumination, fumes and unpleasant odors.
Work may require physical effort such as lifting and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; prolonged sitting and/or standing; bending climbing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, turning and reaching; walking and standing for long periods of time; and working from ladders/scaffolds. Selectees may be required to complete a Physical Capacity Exam to ensure they meet the physical requirements of the position to which they are selected.
Work requires exposure to high noise levels.
There is no specific length of training or experience required; however applicants must be able to demonstrate the aptitude for learning the basic work of the position by achieving a satisfactory score on the written examination.
