About the Position:

Position(s) will be filled under the Department of the Army Pathways Intern Program. Click here for more information on Pathways program participation.  The Department of the Army Pathways Interns may be converted to a permanent position within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

This intern position is designed to prepare a student trainee for possible employment after graduation as a Biologist GS-401-11. Interns will be assigned to one or more higher graded specialists who will assign tasks designed to increase familiarity with the target occupation, in a real world work environment.

NOTE: This vacancy has no guarantee of a Noncompetitive Conversion into the Competitive Service. Termination in this position may occur after participating Interns are no longer eligible for this type of appointment (Typically upon graduation or up to 120 days following graduation).

This opportunity follows a standard promotional path:

    1. Internship at the GS-04 (typically college students with Sophomore or Junior standing). 
    2. After completion of Internship requirements, conversion to the entry-level for the target occupation. Entry level for Biologist (0401) positions is at the GS-05 or GS-07 level. The actual grade level at the time of conversion depends on academic achievement and other factors.
    3. The entry-level position will have a target full performance level, GS-11. Progression from the entry-level to the full performance level for this occupation will depend on successful completion of all requirements for promotion. Promotions may be considered after a year at each grade level, but are not guaranteed to occur on a specific time schedule.

Duties

Help

As an intern, you will be assigned to a senior specialist or group of specialists. You will be assigned tasks designed to familiarize you with different aspects of the occupation. Tasks will vary depending on the senior specialist's current workload, but may include the following: Work as a team member engaged in special studies as assigned. The incumbent is required to accurately identify fish and wildlife using a systematic key, and to identify fish and wildlife as required to complete the surveys.

Duties may include but not be limited to:

  • Assist district biologist with river studies
  • Assist in sensitive species capture activities
  • Collect and record data from site visits
  • Preparation and repair of sampling equipment

  • In accordance with the Pathways Intern Program Requirements, the selectee must sign a Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement that states the internship period, work schedule, position information, and program requirements.
  • This position requires that you complete 640 working hours under the Intern program in order to be able to be converted into the competitive service. (Note: at a minimum working Part-Time 16 hours per pay period you would be required to work 40 pay periods or about one year and seven months to gain 640 hours.)

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this internship is a College Sophomore or Junior with a 3.0 GPA and experience in natural resource management, biology, or fisheries and wildlife management.  Experience may be either hands on or in a classroom setting.  Experience in trailering and operating boats on reservoirs and rivers is desirable.  Strong candidates will meet the educational requirements and have experience such as preparing presentation materials such as Powerpoint slides, writing reports, and public speaking. Qualified candidates will meet the educational requirements as advertised regardless of experience level. Candidates must be available for overnight travel and be able to work in harsh and adverse conditions during long workdays to complete required sampling duties. 

To qualify for a Pathways Internship at the GS-04, students must have completed two full academic years of post-high school study, or have an associate's degree.  Two full academic years is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university, or school to represent two years of full-time study.

Intern's Responsibilities: 

  • Provide proof of enrollment as necessary
  • Notify the agency of any change in your enrollment status and/or work schedule
  • Maintain at least a half-time course load as defined by the educational institution
  • Remain in good academic standing
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0 and above
  • Adhere to an established work schedule
  • Adhere to the Intern Program requirements
  • Participate in agency training classes or programs
  • Perform, successfully, the assigned duties listed in your position description
  • Observe all workplace rules

This internship prepares students for conversion to the Biology  occupation. This occupation has specific educational requirements for entry, and applicants for the intern program must show evidence their planned academic program will meet those requirements. Students who graduate without meeting those requirements will not be converted to the target position, and will be separated from federal service. Educational requirements for conversion to the target position are:

To qualify at the GS-4 level applicants must have completed two years post high school education

(60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours). Courses relating directly to Biological Sciences are also required (biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position). Copies of unofficial transcripts/proof of enrollment must be provided at the time of application to support your educational claims. If selected, OFFICIAL transcripts/proof of enrollment must be submitted prior to establishing a start date.

Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience. Eligibility requirements for conversion to a permanent position. Interns must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program;
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements
  • Meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standard, including any applicable positive education requirement and/or selective placement factors and any other designated special qualifications requirements and conditions of employment (e.g. medical standards) appropriate for the specific competitive service position to which the Intern will be converted;
  • Successfully complete all the requirements of the Internship Program as defined in the agency-participant agreement; and,
  • Perform their job successfully as documented through performance evaluations and/or completion of an Individual Development Plan (IDP).
