About the Position:

Position(s) will be filled under the Department of the Army Pathways Intern Program. Click here for more information on Pathways program participation.  The Department of the Army Pathways Interns may be converted to a permanent position within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

This intern position is designed to prepare a student trainee for employment after graduation in the Professional Engineering occupation. Interns will be assigned to one or more higher graded specialists who will assign tasks designed to increase familiarity with the target occupation, in a real world work environment.

This opportunity follows a standard promotional path:

  1. Internship at the GS-03 (typically college students with Sophomore standing) may have promotion potential up to the GS-09 as a Pathways Intern.
  2. After completion of Internship requirements, conversion to the entry-level for the target occupation is up to GS-09. The actual grade level at the time of conversion depends on academic achievement and other factors.
  3. The entry-level position will have a target full performance level, such as GS-11. Progression from the entry-level to the full performance level for this occupation will depend on successful completion of all requirements for promotion. Promotions may be considered after a year at each grade level, but are not guaranteed to occur on a specific time schedule.

Duties

Help

As an intern, you will be assigned to a senior specialist or group of specialists. You will be assigned tasks designed to familiarize you with different aspects of the occupation. Tasks will vary depending on the senior specialist's current workload, but may include the following:

  • Perform research related to Mechanical Engineering. 
  • Use Microstation and/or AutoCAD. 
  • Use ArcGIS, a Geographic Information System.
  • Utilize engineering concepts such as design, construction, and/or maintenance of roads, buildings, bridges, rivers, dams, and/or levees.
  • Compute quantities of earth and/or various structural items by arithmetic or mathematical formulas.  
  • Create maps, charts, and/or graphs to present mechanical engineering data.  
  • Review reports or documents for sufficiency of data. 
  • Copy or alter mechanical engineering data. 
  • Conduct field inspections and/or project site visits.  
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers and other engineering personnel to identify and solve developmental issues.
  • Use Microsoft programs such as Outlooks, Word, Excel, etc. 
  • Produce written technical materials that are appropriate for the intended audience. 
  • Solve basic arithmetic equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  
  • Plot points on a graph to find relationships in data. 
  • Convert fractions to decimals. 
  • Compute the area of a figure using provided dimensions.

The duration of a Pathways appointment is a trial period.

Direct Deposit of Pay is Required.


Conditions of Employment:

You must be a student to be in good standing and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.  

You must be able to routinely travel back and forth daily to the duty station in St. Louis, Missouri.  

You may work part-time as school schedule requires. Work hours are flexible and will typically be Monday - Friday. 

 You must be at least 16 years of age. 

 You must be a U.S. Citizen.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this internship is enrolled as a Sophomore in a baccalaureate program, and has declared a major directly related to Mechanical Engineering.

To qualify for a Pathways Internship at the GS-03, students must have completed one full academic year of post-high school study.  One full academic year is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university, or school to represent one year of full-time study. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university.

  • You must be in good academic standing with a cumulative 2.0 grade point average.
  • You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate in Mechanical Engineering.
  • You must provide transcripts and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter.
  • YOu must provide detailed resume showing your eligibility for this position.
  • You are required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Communication
  • Basic Math

This internship prepares students for conversion to the Professional Engineering occupation. This occupation has specific educational requirements for entry, and applicants for the intern program must show evidence their planned academic program will meet those requirements. In order to be converted to the target occupation, student must meet all education and/or experience required for that occupation.

Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience. Eligibility requirements for conversion to a permanent position. Interns must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program;
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements
  • Meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standard, including any applicable positive education requirement and/or selective placement factors and any other designated special qualifications requirements and conditions of employment (e.g. medical standards) appropriate for the specific competitive service position to which the Intern will be converted;
  • Successfully complete all the requirements of the Internship Program as defined in the agency-participant agreement; and,
  • Perform their job successfully as documented through performance evaluations and/or completion of an Individual Development Plan (IDP)

The nature of this appointment does not guarantee conversion to a career/career-conditional appointment.
