The incumbent will serve as a fully qualified staff
psychiatrist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) providing
recovery-oriented care to Veterans who are admitted acutely to the 53-bed
mental health inpatient program for stabilization of psychiatric symptoms. The incumbent will be housed within the
Inpatient Program, aligned under the Mental Health Care line and will work
full-time on the inpatient unit. The 53
bed capacity is split between a 32 bed general inpatient unit and a 21 bed unit
that focuses on geriatric care. The
position involves working on both units.
This staff psychiatrist will work on an interdisciplinary academic mental
health team treating Veterans with a full range of diagnosis including mood
disorders, PTSD, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, substance use
disorders and neurocognitive disorders. Average daily caseloads vary from 8-12
patients per team. Duties include, but
not limited to, psychiatric evaluations and psychiatric medication
management. Additionally, great
opportunities to be involved in the educational mission of the MEDVAMC exist by
serving as a rotation supervisor for Baylor College of Medicine trainees as
well as involvement in didactic courses.
All psychiatrists, both inpatient and outpatient clinicians, within the
Mental Health Care Line share on-call responsibilities with approximately 3-4
weekends per year and one weekday per month.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
Degree of doctor of medicine
or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine
or osteopathic medicine.
Current, full and
unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State,
Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of
Columbia.

volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,
AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic;
religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical
competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and

experience, including volunteer experience.
