Summary

The National Park Service (NPS) Landscape Architect Internship Program provides students enrolled in an landscape architecture or landscape designs program an opportunity to gain practical work experience, and  explore Federal careers while still in school. This program is a component of the National Park Service's Pathways Internship Program, which will prepare you for a career as a Landscape Architect. You will be a member of a multi-discipline team of landscape architects,architects,engineers,historians,and photographers in the Heritage Documentation Program, in the preparation of the landscape architecture aspects of Historian drawings, which are deposited in the Library of Congress for public reference and reproduction.

Duties

Help

You will document historic sites and structures of architectural, landscape and technological significance throughout the country.  In doing so you will perform on-site field work and prepare measured and interpretive drawings for the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS)/ Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)/ Historic American Landscapes Survey(HALS) Collections at the Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress.

Qualifications

ALL applicants must meet basic program, education, and experience requirements as indicated below, by the end of the spring 2017 semester, or at the start of the summer employment period, whichever comes first.

Program Requirements: You must be accepted for enrollment and attending college or other technical certification program to be eligible for consideration as a Pathways Intern. Your program and institution must be accredited by the Department of Education, and you must be enrolled on a full or half-time basis. You must be a degree seeking student and be in good academic standing. You are required to submit proof of the same. Specialized Experience Requirements:

Grade 5 requirements: You may qualify at the grade 05 level by education, experience, or a combination of the two. 


Completion of a 4 year program of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major in landscape architecture or landscape design, or directly related field of study, fully meets the requirements at the grade 5 level.  For each year short of graduation, you must have 1 year of experience under professional leadership and guidance which included original landscape design. 

Grade 7 requirements: You may qualify by any of the following:

1) Successful completion of a 5 year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or landscape design, or directly related field of study. 

2) Successful completion of a 4 year program of study leading to a bachelor's degree in the fields above, which included superior academic achievement (SAA) as evidenced by  one of 3 ways: class standing; grade point average, or membership in a nationahonor society. 3) Successful completion of a 4 year program of study leading to a bachelors degree in the fields above, and one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service.  Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-5 level include, but are not limited to, the following: preparing detailed on-site measurements of selected landscape architectural sites and recording them in field notebooks for later transcription into measured drawings; performing architectural drafting and minor detail design. 


Education

Education Requirements: You must have a minimum of a  bachelor's degree from a 4 year course of study, or the equivalent, in Landscape Architect or Landscape Design from an institution accredited by the Department of Education. Foreign education may be accepted, provided it has been reviewed by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.  

Applicants at the grade 5 ONLY, for each year short of graduation, you must have 1 year of experience under professional leadership and guidance which included original landscape design.

In addition, you will be evaluated on the extent to which you meet the following knowledge, skills and abilities for this particular position: 

  • Knowledge and understanding of standard landscape architectural and architectural drawings.
  • Knowledge of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and related modeling or geographic software.
  • Graphic skills and ability.
  • Knowledge of Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) and/or the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) Standards and Guidelines for documentation

Work Samples: 

Landscape Architects measure buildings, landscapes, industrial structures, sites, and objects, including floating vessels, to produce existing-conditions drawings in CAD, including drawings that interpret and explain landscaping in relation to the same. Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of, and ability to produce, standard two-dimensional landscape architectural drawings (site plans, plans, elevations, sections, details, axonometrics). Applicants who possess three-dimensional modeling skills should also submit appropriate examples. Work samples should be accompanied by a short explanation, including a description of technique (e.g. freehand pencil sketch, AutoCAD 2013 drawing, etc.)

Applicants will be evaluated on the following three skills: 1. hand lettering; 2. freehand sketching and 3. precision computer-aided drafting.
