About the Position:   Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Help

This position is located in the Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC), Preventative Medicine, Optometry Clinic, Fort Drum, NY. In this position you will receive telephone calls and visitors in the clinic. You will verify patient eligibility for treatment and schedule and/or coordinate appointments for patients at various clinics and explain necessary test preparations to patients. Interview patients to the clinic in order to determine the nature of the visit. Maintain all patient records electronically and in hard copy.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

General Experience: To qualify, applicants must identify in their resume that they possess one year of general experience that includes performing progressively responsible clerical, office or other work related to recordkeeping; providing clerical or administrative support; scheduling appointments, maintaining charts, files, or records; providing information to visitors; and utilizing a personal computer and office automation software programs.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas: 

  • Knowledge of Clinic Policies and Procedures
  • Skill in Office Automation
  • Ability to Communicate in Writing
  • Ability to Communicate Orally

A qualified typist is required for this position (40 words per minute).

Education

Some Federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

Education: In lieu of the experience listed above, you will qualify for this position if you have two (2) full years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial, technical school, junior college, college, or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. (NOTE: You MUST provide a copy of your transcripts.)

Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
