    The NASA Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI) at NASA Ames Research Center is currently seeking interested applicants for the position of Deputy Director. SSERVI carries out world-class multi-disciplinary research, coordinates and catalyzes lunar and small body science and related technology development across a range of disciplines and organizations, and communicates the results to scientists, educators, and the public.

    Responsibilities

    • Assists the Director in program development and planning, directing, coordinating, and managing the domestic and international activities of SSERVI, particularly in the areas of lunar and small body science, and with application to human exploration.
    • Provides leadership in key SSERVI activities across various other science disciplines, including planetary science, the geological sciences, and remote sensing. Supports in operational aspects including budget and agency policy matters.
    • Represents and advocates for SSERVI to key center, agency and community stakeholders, advisory councils, and committees, helping to further develop domestic and international partnerships that enable new scientific efforts.
    • Assists Director as technical monitor for SSERVI Lead Team Cooperative Agreements. Helps plan and implement future research solicitations for SSERVI membership, coordinates solicitation review, develops peer review panels, and recommends new teams.
    • Serves as authoritative source for decisions and guidance on program objective changes. Develops strategies, plans, and oversees project elements. Interacts with senior management to formulate agreements and plans for support of project activities.
    • As a recognized leader in the field, publishes and presents data on SSERVI research accomplishments. Contributes to the development of research and technology solutions to stimulate and manage interdisciplinary virtual cooperation and collaboration.
    • Assists in transitioning research results to benefit NASA missions. Helps develop programs to train students/researchers and provide outreach to the public. Helps establish and maintain relationships with industry, government, and related partners.
    • Initiates and facilitates transfer and commercialization of NASA technology into products and services that benefit humankind. Activities include business management, marketing, partnership development, and program and project management.
    • Identifies and manages resolution of business-related problems and issues associated with government, industry, academia partnerships and/or collaborations in relation to mission with national and international impact.

    Qualifications

    Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

    To qualify for the GS-15:

    One year of specialized experience is defined as experience in overseeing or managing the work of a team of people in conducting scientific research or in performing technical projects in a science or a related technical discipline, including but not limited to, lunar science, geological science, planetary science, and remote sensing; AND experience in developing technology partnerships.

    In order to qualify for this position you must meet Basic Education Requirement

    Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) physical science, mathematics, life Science, computer science, or other fields of science.

    Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

    The accreditation, type of degree, and course work taken will determine if the basic education requirements are met.

    The degree must have been received in the year of, or any year subsequent to the original date of accreditation. To find out if a school has an ABET accreditation, go to ABET accredited schools

    ABET or Foreign accreditation requirement applies to foreign education. Applicants who have completed part or all of their education outside the U.S. must have their foreign education evaluated by an accredited organization to ensure that the foreign education is comparable to the education received in accredited educational institutions in the U.S. If selected, a written evaluation translated in English of any foreign education must be completed and provided to the Human Resources official making the offer.
