This is a mixed schedule TERM appointment not to exceed 13 months, but may be extended for up to 4 years maximum depending on work availability and funding, duty stationed at Voyageurs National Park, International Falls, MN. Anticipated full time work schedule is from April through October, and part time work schedule (27 hours per week/54 hours per pay period) November through March.
AREA INFORMATION: Voyageurs National Park is a unique water-based park, comprised of 218,000 gorgeous acres of water and glacier carved, pine studded islands. The park is a four season destination, accessible by motorboats, kayaks, canoes, houseboats, snowshoes, cross country skis and snow machines. There are numerous hiking trails for beginners and for the most adventurous of hikers! Have you ever driven your vehicle on "hard water"? You can in Voyageurs, as winter ice roads are plowed and maintained on some of the lake surfaces within the park. It's just another way to experience one of America's most treasured national parks.
The park is nestled in the Minnesota Arrowhead Region, adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area and the Quetico. There are four lake gateways into Voyageurs, including Rainy Lake, Lake Kabetogama, Ash River Trail and Crane Lake. International Falls is the full service gateway community at the north entrance, offering a hospital, two medical clinics, shopping, school district, community college, movie theater, bowling alley, community center and a variety of churches. International Falls also serves as the gateway to Canada, so those who are visiting Voyageurs may also include a day trip of sightseeing in our sister city, Fort Frances, Ontario.

This position works park wide providing journeyman level skills and physical /technical expertise for a wide variety of routines, projects and jobs within Voyageurs National Park. The physical distance of most park facilities, and the difficult water based logistics and remotes locations of the park facilities requires this position be multi-talented in a number of trades. Because of the complexity and journeyman level knowledge associated with these tasks, the incumbent is expected to perform the duties as described independently. They are responsible for diagnosing, researching, making recommendations to supervisors and properly completing the work with even the most complex or specialized repairs, with no additional on-site technical assistance.
Performs historic and non-historic preservation construction and maintenance for buildings, docks, and campgrounds. Duties require a variety of skills such as carpentry, masonry, and painting associated with the repair and maintenance of structures and related facilities.
Maintains, repairs, and constructs water and wastewater systems. The systems are maintained to meet Department of Health standards. Measures, cuts, bends, threads, and installs replacement piping in the repair and replacement of pipes, joints and fixtures in buildings, pump houses, and lift stations. Performs plumbing repairs and lays out new construction plumbing in Park buildings.
Operates a variety of motorized and non-motorized boats. Operates two and four wheel vehicles towing trailers. Equipment such as bobcats and forklifts.
Estimate material needs and have knowledge of the necessary steps to complete projects.
Construct concrete forms, mix prepare and pour concrete, spread/ level and finish concrete.
Must be skilled in the safe and operation of various hand and power tools to accomplish above listed duties. (example: power handsaws, radial arm saws, table saws, wrenches, power drills, volt meters, presses, air compressors, etc.)
Maintains or repairs fuel distribution systems. This includes pump, solenoid valves, and pressure regulation valve replacement or repair.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed inside and outside. Outside work exposes the employee to inclement weather, which includes, heat, cold, rain, and snow (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Work entails frequent exposure to dirt, dust, and greasy areas; bad smelling fumes may be present. Tasks require the employee to work under structures and on scaffolding, ladders, rooftops, and poles. Exposure to electrical shock while working on electrical devices, and slipping hazards on surfaces of unstable or slippery footing. Worker is subject to cuts, abrasions, and insect bites.
This is a drug tested position. All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Incumbents will also be subjected to random drug testing.
Driver's License: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year or more frequently if management determines such need exists.
