The United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps is a uniformed service of health professionals protecting and promoting the public health by serving in key federal health agencies. Officers play vital roles in disease prevention, emergency response, health policy, and medical research, often deploying to address crises like disasters and outbreaks. Unlike the armed forces, USPHS is a non-combat service focused on public health, while serving underserved communities and advancing national health security and wellness.
SRCOSTEP is a competitive USPHS program for students in health-related fields. Participants are commissioned as ensigns (O-1) and receive full pay and benefits during their final academic year, in exchange for an active-duty service commitment. After graduation and licensure, they begin full-time assignments in federal agencies. SRCOSTEP provides early exposure to federal public health, leadership development, and service in underserved communities, with the benefits of a uniformed service.
USPHS officers detailed to ICE Health Service Corps deliver care to underserved populations nationwide and abroad. IHSC supports healthcare professionals as leaders, enabling clinicians to practice to the full extent of their license and encouraging continuous growth and improvement.
