Duties

Help

As an Airplane Pilot at the GS-2181-13 grade level, some of your typical work assignments may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as a pilot/co-pilot responsible for flying USMS owned and/or operated large (over 12,500 pounds gross weight) turbine powered, turbo-prop, and reciprocating multi-engine fixed wing aircraft.
  • Support prisoner movements; special operations; patrol and reconnaissance; transport of cargoes of ammunition, pyrotechnics, chemical munitions, and parachute deliveries.
  • Fly in and out of small airfields over all types of terrain under visual or instrument flight rules, during the day and night, in the Continental United States, over water, and in U.S. territories and foreign countries.
  • Ensure all pre-flight, flight, and post-flight operations are conducted within the standards set by applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and in accordance with USMS flight operations policies and procedures.
  • Ensure aircraft are properly maintained and reviewing and/or completing aircraft maintenance reports and aircraft logs and trip reports as required. This includes identifying any and all irregularities in those logs and taking appropriate actions to correct them.

  • This is a Testing Designated Positions (TDP) and is subject to random drug testing.
  • May be required to successfully complete a trial/probationary period.
  • Status Candidates must meet time-in-grade requirements (52 weeks at the next lower grade level).

  • Must possess and submit current Class II FAA Medical Certificate.
  • Must possess and submit FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate.
  • Selectee(s) must enter into a 1 year service agreement.

Qualifications

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit Promotion and Veterans Employment Opportunity Act (VEOA) applicants must provide an SF 50 Notice of Personnel Action that indicates proof of status and time-in-grade eligibility. The SF 50 must include the position, title, series, grade, step, tenure, type of service (Competitive or Excepted) and career status (career or career-conditional). No award SF 50 will be accepted as proof of status and time-in-grade eligibility.

  • One year at the GS-12 grade level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-13 grade level.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Minimum eligibility requirements for positions in this occupation are based on possession of the appropriate Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot certificates and/or appropriate military ratings, meeting the applicable flight hour requirements, and possession of the knowledge and skills required for the positions.

Certificates and Ratings:

Candidates must possess a current FAA Air Transport Pilot Certificate or the appropriate military rating. (Note: Candidates establishing eligibility based on military flight experience must provide official orders, forms, or logbooks showing their status as an appropriate rated military pilot.) You must submit a copy of your certificates and ratings to show you meet the following requirements:
  • FAA Air Transport Pilot Certificate (Front and Back) with Multi-Engine Land rating
  • FAA Air Transport Pilot Certificate (Front and Back) with at least one heavy turbojet/turbo prop type rating
Flight Experience:

You must possess the flight experience described below that demonstrates the following knowledge and skills:
  • Flying large (over 12,500 pounds gross weight) turbine powered, turbo-prop, and/or reciprocating multi-engine fixed wing aircraft;
  • Operating aircraft over established routes for transporting passengers, freight, and supplies;
  • Ensuring pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight operations were conducted with the standards set by applicable Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations;
  • Ensuring an aircraft is properly maintained;
  • Completing and submitting aircraft maintenance reports, logs, and trip reports; and
  • Performing pre-flight and post-flight inspections.

You must possess the following minimum flight hours. Please include flight hour information for the following categories within your resume/application.
  • Flying Time--Last 12 Months: 100
  • Multi-Engine Aircraft: 500
Medical Requirements:
  • Current Class II FAA medical certificate is required. (You must submit a copy of your certificate with your application.)
Quality Ranking Factors:

For this position, the following Quality Ranking Factors are not mandatory, but are highly desirable and will be given added weight in the ranking process. If you possess these certifications, please submit a copy with your application.
  1. Serving as Pilot-in-Command of a B-737 within the last five years.
  2. Possessing a Boeing or Airbus aircraft type rating.
