Duties

Help
  • Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps.
  • Plans and lays out installation, repair, and/or modification of high pressure piping systems and equipment applying and interpreting information in blueprints, charts, and sketches.
  • Troubleshoots/inspects high-pressure piping systems and equipment and determines need for modification and/or repair to insure proper and safe operation.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains safe and clean work environment.
  • Uses and maintains tools.

  • (cont) Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers .stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • This position is designated as a key position IAW AFI 36-507. Duties of this position are essential to the accomplishment of wartime/contingency operations. (cont)
  • (cont) Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate drivers license may be required for the position.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4200, Plumbing and Pipefitting Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as, steam heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps, and radiators; and technical practices in order to determine need for modifications and repairs.
2. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
3. Skill in troubleshooting/inspecting piping systems to identify irregularities and existing and/or potential problems and system malfunctions.
4. Skill in using and maintaining hand and power tools such as wrenches, pipe threaders, cutters, dividers, chalk lines, drills, grinders, and ground fault interrupter equipment.
5. Ability to install, modify, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair industrial or domestic high-temperature water and high pressure
piping systems and equipment without more than normal supervision.
6. Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (including blueprint reading); and to interpret information in blueprints, charts, and sketches to plan and lay out installation, repair, and/or modification of high pressure piping
systems and equipment.

Physical Effort:
Employee makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard-to-reach places. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers.

Working Conditions:
The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The pipefitter is sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The pipefitter is frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Employee uses and maintains prescribed safety/protective clothing and equipment such as the following: hard hat, safety glasses, shoes, belts, face shields, respirators, gas masks, ear protection devices, gloves, coveralls, and foul weather gear.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
