The incumbent is a newly hired Intelligence Research Specialist who assists Senior Intelligence Research Specialists and Special Agents by performing preliminary research, analysis and evaluation of raw intelligence data for segments of large projects and studies.

  • Collects and catalogs new drug law enforcement intelligence information in a file or automated system according to class and topic.
  • Receives or gathers intelligence reports and data in support of drug law enforcement investigations. Provides input on drug-related aspects of political, social, or economic trends or situations, such as the common methods used to smuggle narcotics into the country.
  • Utilizes national and international information systems and databases, as appropriate.
  • Evaluates all available intelligence information pertaining to a complete but limited topic or assigned area of study, or contributing to a larger study in an area, especially in the area of drug law enforcement, but also in areas such as one related to political, economic, social, technical or military conditions in one or more foreign countries. Alerts supervisor or higher-grade specialist of new information or emerging trends that merit further examination or study.
  • Produce written strategic, operational and tactical intelligence products.
  • Provide oral briefing to senior level managers and policy makers.
  • Collects information through various means, including the debriefing of witnesses and informants.
  • Collects and catalogs new drug law enforcement intelligence information in a file or automated system according to class and topic.
  • May be required to provide testimony during career as an Intelligence Research Specialist

Qualifications

ELIGIBILITY FOR RECENT GRADUATES PROGRAM: To be eligible for the Recent Graduates Program, you must be a recent graduate who has completed a qualifying associate, bachelor, masters, professional, or doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from an accredited educational institution (www.education.gov/accreditation) within the previous two years. Veterans whose military service interfered with their ability to apply during that two year period may apply within two years of military discharge or 6 years from the date of receipt of the degree whichever comes first.

GS-05: Must have three years of general experience, one year of which was equivalent to at least the GS-4 Federal grade level performing the following duties: file maintenance, collecting data and preparing reports; OR
have 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or equivalent degree; OR
a combination of both education and experience.

GS-07: Must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 Federal grade level performing such duties as selecting, abstracting, and compiling data from specific sources; and evaluating and making preliminary analyses of data; OR

meet one of the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement by earning a bachelor's degree with at least one of the following: (1) a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale; (2) a 3.5 GPA for required courses completed in a major field of study during junior and senior year of a 4-year college or university; (3) class standing of upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or a major subdivision of the college; or (4) membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society certified by the Association of College Honor Societies, excluding freshman honor societies; OR

a combination of both, experience and education.

GS-09: Must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 Federal grade level performing such duties as data processing, data tracking and file management; locating, compiling, and developing information to fill intelligence gaps; and performing preliminary research, analysis and evaluation of raw data; OR

a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years graduate level education leading to such a degree or an LL.B or J.D.; OR

a combination of both, experience and education.

Conditions of Employment:

·This is a one year appointment in the excepted service which may lead to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service.

·Recent Graduates must complete 40 hours of training during the first year and maintain a fully successful performance evaluation to be considered for conversion to the competitive service.

·You will serve a trial period during your participation in the Recent Graduate Program.

·Participant Agreement: If selected, you must sign a Pathways Recent Graduate Participant Agreement.

·Upon successful completion of the Recent Graduate program, you may be converted to a term or permanent position as an Intelligence Research Specialist GS-0132 (full performance level to GS-13) in the competitive service consistent with agency needs, academic achievement, and demonstrated potential. However, future budgetary events, hiring restrictions, or other events may preclude the conversion.

·Newly hired Intelligence Research Specialists must successfully complete a 10-week Basic Intelligence Research Specialist (BIRS) Training Course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

·Intelligence Research Specialists are subject to reassignment to any location in the United States depending on the needs of the DEA. All applicants must be available for relocation throughout their career with DEA and will be required to sign a Mobility Agreement to this effect when accepting an offer of employment. The Mobility Agreement confirms your understanding and agreement to accept reassignment to any location depending on the needs of the DEA and the Intelligence Program. This mandatory agreement remains in effect throughout your DEA career as an Intelligence Research Specialist. The opportunity to transfer to other assignments as advertised will be available to you.

POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION: You must successfully complete a pre-employment polygraph examination. If you receive a Countermeasures or Significant Response result on your polygraph you will not be eligible for hire in a DEA Intelligence Research Specialist position for a period of 3 years from the date of your polygraph examination.

Education

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Direct Deposit: All Federal employees are required to have Federal salary payments made by direct deposit to a financial institution of their choosing.
