Duties

Help
  • Provide leadership and technical expertise to project staff.
  • Design, develop and conduct research programs and projects in industrial hygiene, scientific health studies, exposure assessments, and laboratory research, that lead to advances in the field of occupational safety and health.
  • Make recommendations for new occupational safety and health research initiatives to advance scientific methods and knowledge into the causes, risk factors and evaluation of research to prevent work-related illness, injuries, disabilities, and death.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science.
-OR-
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene.

A certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In additions to meeting the basic requirements above, Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS- 13 grade level in the Federal service as defined below:

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience providing technical scientific advice in the formulation, development and performance of research projects to document the burden and causes of work-related diseases.

Documenting Experience: In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. It is expected that this documentation is included in the employee's official personnel record. In order to receive credit for experience in your resume that is not within the official series and grade level of your official position, you must provide a copy of the appropriate documentation of such experience as indicated above.

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements.
