Major Duties:

  • Conducts intake procedures; obtains general medical information, including allergies and drug sensitivities; and takes and records vital signs (TPR -temperature, Pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height, weight).
  • Assess/Triage patients as prescribed by hospital or clinic policy (i.e,. Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA). Performs a full range of activities pertinent to the containment and prevention of hospital-acquired infections .
  • Administers oral medication, performs subcutaneous and intramuscular injections for single dose/unit dose and performs blood glucose testing.
  • Completes medical charting thru Electronic Health Record and requests medical charts.

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Upon tentative selection, selectee will be requested to complete, sign, and submit the Addendum to OF-306, Child Care & Indian Child Care Worker Position form. Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 40 hours per week with Regular /Alternate work schedules.

Security Clearance: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. You will receive instructions on how to obtain and submit fingerprints and background investigation documentation. After you begin your employment, your continued employment is contingent upon the outcome of a complete background investigation as determined by the sensitivity level of your position. The investigation must find that you are suitable for Federal employment in your position. If you are found not suitable, you will be terminated after you begin work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Training:

  • Completed an approved medical assistant training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or by any accrediting agency recognized by the United State Department of Education. OR
  • Completed a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States that provided clinical proficiency with the necessary scope of knowledge to perform the duties as described in the vacancy announcement.
Certification:
  • Current and active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). OR
  • Current and active Registered Medical Assistant certification (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT). OR
  • Current and active National Certified Medical Assistant certification (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). OR
  • Completed a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States that provided clinical proficiency with the necessary scope of knowledge to perform the duties as described in the vacancy announcement.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-05:
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: determining patient assessment, distinguishing between normal and abnormal findings, and administering intervention as prescribed by the provider, typical of medical assistant or health education positions. OR
  • 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. OR
  • Combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position.
GS-06:
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: venipuncture, collecting lab specimens, performing basic wound/skin care measures, and administering oral medication, typical of experienced medical assistant or health education positions.
GS-07:
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: providing complex health care to high risk patients, using specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, EKG, & IV fluid pumps, interpreting examination requests accurately and recognizing a need for additional tests, and establishing a patient care plan, typical of experienced or senior medical assistant or health technician positions. OR
  • 1 year (18 semester hours) of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position. OR
  • Combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-0640-07 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
