Duties

Help

  • Educate the patients about their medication regimen regarding number of refills, labeling instructions, proper storage, and provides pre-printed medication pamphlets that reviews significant side effects of the medication when appropriate.
  • Conducts a basic review of the chart to determine appropriate patient and number of medications, including quantities to be dispensed, whether doses are within the acceptable range based on patient age and weight, entry of data into the computer accurately for proper prescription labels, assembling labels and appropriate dosage forms for review prior to giving outpatient medication to the patient.
  • Accurately fills new, refill and discharge prescriptions with correct drug name strength, dosage form and quantity according to the patient medication profile.
  • Maintains the physical inventory of the pharmacy department, which includes the outpatient, Omnicell, and pharmacy storage area.
  • Re-packs bulk medication and performs assigned compounding of specially ordered medication.

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Upon tentative selection, selectee will be requested to complete, sign, and submit the Addendum to OF-306, Child Care & Indian Child Care Worker Position form. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

Alternative Work Schedule: May be required to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays to provide continuity coverage.

Must have a bank account at a financial institution for electronic direct deposit of salary payment.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part-time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

For positions at GS-4 and above: Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of:

  • Pharmaceutical nomenclature;
  • Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals;
  • Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the
  • Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0661-05:
Have (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Examples include: recognizing appropriate auxiliary warnings and packaging requirements of drugs dispensed; Assisting pharmacy staff in filling out outpatient prescriptions under a pharmacist's supervision, (Specialized experience may have been gained in a hospital pharmacy or retail pharmacy, or in a pharmaceutical firm or laboratory. The experience must have provided a basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature; characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals) OR

Have completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses, OR

Have successfully completed pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices while serving in the Armed Forces which is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of specialized experience, OR

Have a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-0661-06:
Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Examples Include: typing prescription labels, calculating doses to match physician's order with pharmacy stocks and filling prescriptions. OR

Successful completion of at least one half year (9 semester hours) of graduate-level education in Pharmacology or a related field of study, from an accredited college or university. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain pharmacy certificate, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
