Duties

Help

As a Microbiologist, you will:

  • Carry out a variety of laboratory procedures and processes as it relates to microorganisms and their reactions to the environment.
  • Perform various techniques to rapidly identify and characterize microbiological agents that cause a number of diseases.
  • Modify standard study methods and requirements, practices, or techniques or existing guide to address current and evolving problems or issues.
  • Identify methods and procedures to collect data, and conducts experiments and studies, making adjustments in methods and procedures as appropriate during the course of the studies or experiments.
  • Provide expert scientific advice, consultation and leadership in designing, coordinating and maintaining scientific project goals, objectives and priorities within a CIO and/or CDC/ATSDR and in the general public health community.
  • Implement scientific policies and procedures on microbiology/biological science practices and principles.
  • Plan, prioritize, initiates design, conduct, coordinate, direct and lead basic and applied research studies.
  • Maintain complete, detailed records of all experiments performed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet the following qualifications for Microbiologist, GS-0403-11/12/13/14

A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent from an accredited college and/or university.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet the following qualifications for Microbiologist, GS-0403-11/12/13/14

GS-11:
In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, an applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.
Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in microbiological and/or biomedical laboratories identifying, interpreting and applying established approaches and solutions to microbiological tests.
OR
Have three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree OR Ph.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree in microbiology, or specific area of study such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, algology, protozoology, parasitology, immunology, serology, microbial genetics, or soil microbiology; or specific applied fields of microbiology such as clinical and public health microbiology, food technology, production processes, industrial fermentation, pollution, etc. Graduate study in related fields such as experimental pathology, infectious diseases, epidemiology, biochemistry, animal or plant physiology, genetics, plant pathology, and insect disease control, may also be pertinent, provided it has direct application to microbiological work.
OR
Have combination of experience as describe in "A" above and graduate education.

GS-12: In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, an applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in conducting scientific investigations related to pathogenic microorganisms and preparing reports to disseminate results.

GS-13: In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, an applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in providing advice, consultation and leadership in designing, overseeing, implementing and conducting microbiological scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve problems.

GS-14: In addition to meeting the basic qualifications, an applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience developing, designing, analyzing and interpreting clinical laboratory data sets involving the detection, treatment and prevention of public health related illnesses.

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements.
