Duties

Help
  • Provides executive leadership, strategic formulation, and management for a Directorate engaged in the Agency's astrobiology, astrophysics, planetary sciences, biological sciences and Earth science programs.
  • Plans, directs and coordinates all aspects of the ARC Science activities. Leads the Directorate in conducting basic and applied research, technology development, and flight project development and operations for NASA programs.
  • Defines the overall strategic initiatives, and broadly defines the scientific and technical portfolio of the Directorate.
  • Periodically assesses the scientific and technical portfolio of the Science Directorate against metrics and programmatic considerations and adjusts strategy and tactical plans accordingly.
  • Establishes and maintains advocacy and relations with partner Organizations across the Center with partner organizations at other NASA Centers; with sponsoring stakeholders at Agency Headquarters, and with industry and international partners.
  • Participates with the Center Director, Center Deputy Director, and other Organizational Directors in planning the overall scope, nature, and direction of the Center's research and development programs.

Qualifications

To qualify, candidates must have the skill and ability to perform the duties described above as demonstrated by progressively responsible supervisory/managerial experience, normally with several years at the GS-15 level or equivalent, which demonstrates clearly the ability to manage people and resources. Candidates must also demonstrate qualifications in the managerial and technical areas noted below. TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Demonstrated experience in providing leadership and management of a scientific organization, comprised primarily of research scientists, in one or more of these disciplines: astrobiology, astrophysics, planetary sciences, Earth sciences, or biological sciences.

2. Demonstrated experience in the strategic initiation, planning, coordination and implementation of theoretical, experimental and/or observational research programs in one or more of these disciplines: astrobiology, astrophysics, planetary sciences, Earth sciences, or biological sciences.

3. Demonstrated experience in cultivating and maintaining professional relations with key stakeholders across a large research organization, at sponsoring agencies, in academia and industry, and with international partners.

Education

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree, preferably an advanced degree in engineering, physical science, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, or electronics.
