Duties

Help
  • You will repair heavy mobile equipment and vehicles such as bulldozers, road graders, heavy construction and earth moving vehicles, front-end loaders, back-hoes and heavy special purpose vehicles.
  • You will analyze malfunctions and determine the extent of repairs necessary by the use of a wide variety of test equipment.
  • You will connect, mesh, align and adjust parts and systems to assure proper operation of the complete system or vehicle.
  • You will measure, fit and install components such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears and cylinders, to specified clearances.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver?s license.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform the work of a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Repairing, maintaining, and overhauling systems on a wide assortment of heavy mobile/weight handling equipment and specialized equipment and systems in accordance with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic principles; 2) Diagnosing and troubleshooting malfunctions in heavy mobile/weight handling equipment; 3) Conducting functional and performance tests on completed work assignments.

A forty-hour work week is typical for this position.

You may perform shift work and work overtime and/or be "called back".

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

You may work at a job site or location other than a permanently assigned location.

Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
May work in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items, unassisted, weighing up to 40 pounds, and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Is sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise. When outside, may work in bad weather. Both inside and outside, workers are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes. Is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as hearing protection, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Personal protective equipment such as protective clothing, helmets, goggles, respirators, etc. may be required to be worn.

A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments.
