What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

Salary: $71,583 (Step 01) to $93,056 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

The incumbent of this position is entitled to a cost of living allowance (COLA) of 2.86% for 2020 in addition to basic salary.

Duties

Help

As a Geneticist within the Alaska Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Applies comprehensive, intensive, practical knowledge from the fields of avian biology and disease genetics to research issues important for avian biology and natural resource management.
  • Assists with the design of field and laboratory projects and develops new methods, approaches, or protocols in avian population genetic structure, phylogeography, and disease characterization.
  • Collects, processes, and analyzes avian blood, serum, and/or tissue samples for the characterization of host population genetic characteristics and wildlife disease.
  • Applies comprehensive, intensive, practical knowledge from the fields of avian biology and disease genetics to research issues important for avian biology and natural resource management.
  • Independently and collaboratively prepares reports, data releases, and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Physical Demand:

 Additionally, the work will require long hours of standing and sitting in place in a laboratory and office setting, often in front of a computer terminal, and requires dexterity for complex and detailed manipulations. Some lifting of equipment, supplies, or samples will occasionally be required.

Work Environment:

The work will require long hours working in the field, often in poor weather. This position while working in the field will carry firearms. Duties of this position require sitting for extended periods of time at a computer terminal.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • This position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.
  • Prior to appointment, the person selected will be required to take and pass (both at Federal expense):
    (1) a physical exam and (2) a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. From thereon, the incumbent may be subject to random drug testing.
  • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.  Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record.  If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
  • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

FOR GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following (A, B, or C) to qualify for the GS-11 level:

A. Three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in genetics, or graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellulary biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics and that placed sufficient emphasis on genetics.

B. One year of professional, specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service, performing duties such as applying and adapting professional knowledge of genetics principles, theories, and practices to scientific techniques and practices in the completion of assignments; assists in the planning, organizing, and implementing of genetics research projects; maintains quality control of data collection and database management, and prepares reports.

C. A combination of graduate level education as described in choice A and appropriate specialized experience as described in choice B above which equates to 100% of the qualification requirements when combined.
