Duties

Help
  • Determines proper applications of work methods, procedures, and trade techniques to be applied in performing the ballistic welding involved in repairing combat vehicle hulls, turrets and body assemblies.
  • Instructs workers on the use of measuring instruments, such as fillet gages, measuring tapes, angle gages, templates, jigs and fixtures.
  • Review and answer worker?s questions regarding technical manuals, blueprints, sketches, drawings and specifications to ensure procedures are implemented properly.
  • Select proper tools, materials and equipment for welding and operate a variety of welding machines, cutting equipment, power and hand tools.
  • Must be able to identify various types of light, heavy gauge and hardened metals and make a wide range of welds, determine disassembly or repair necessary and materials to be used to complete the welding process without errors.
  • Implements safety and housekeeping rules and ensure they are adhered to so that accidents are prevented from occurring.

  • This position requires incumbent to possess a fillet certification in accordance with military specifications.

Qualifications

  • Position is being filled by Temporary Promotion not to exceed 1 year.
  • Position is being filled by Temporary Reassignment not to exceed 1 year.
  • Temporary promotions may be extended up to a maximum of 5 years.
  • Temporary promotion may be made permanent without further competition.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Welder Leader without more than normal supervision. Serving as a working leader of 3 or more employees in accomplishing trades and labor work. Demonstrate proper work methods to meet deadlines. Perform welding in the repair, rebuild and overhaul of combat vehicles. Ensure welding processes are applied when manufacturing, repairing, and modifying metal and alloy parts. Investigates work related problems (e.g., low productivity) to identify causes and implements corrective actions.supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT Work involves standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling. Welding is performed in flat, vertical,
  • horizontal, and as required, overhead positions. Frequently lifts items weighing 15-40 pounds and occasionally items over 45 pounds.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS Most of work is performed in building that is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Incumbent is exposed to fumes, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, and heated materials; possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects; and discomforts when wearing protective clothing, gloves and flash shield.

  • Two year probationary period may be required.
  • Direct deposit of pay is required.
  • This is a Career Program (CP) 17 -Material Maintenance Management position.
  • Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employee.
  • Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.
  • Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest.
