This position is part of the Bureau of Indian Education, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Academic Programs, Advanced Technical Education programs. As an Instructor (Chemistry) you will be responsible for providing college level instruction in the field of Chemistry to meet the education goals and objectives of SIPI.

As an Instructor (Chemistry) (DEU), GS-1701-11, your typical work assignments may include but are not limited to:

  • Teach courses in Chemistry; curriculum and program development and/or revision including program review and the development and assessment of student outcomes for courses and programs; working with community and campus organizations; participating in department, division and college committees; maintain currency in the discipline and otherwise fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of instructional staff or faculty.
  • Develop criteria for testing, assignments, and other instruments to evaluate student proficiency as well as responsibility for developing, annually updating, and maintaining course/program assessments.
  • Develop student assignments, schedules, selects appropriate methods of instruction and determines assessment and evaluation criteria.
  • Maintain statistical records/data of student proficiency and attendance and other records consistent with course objectives and college policies.
  • Conduct classroom activities which include lectures, audio visual materials, field trips, group discussion, laboratories, and other educational practices for the classroom.
  • Develop lesson plans and other guides required to meet the goal of training student and leading them in their field of academic study.
  • Represent SIPI at professional conferences, workshops and seminars; maintains professional contact with industry and government or with colleges and universities in the state and nation.
  • Serve as faculty advisor and mentor for students.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Alternative Qualification Standard, Professional Instructor Series 1701, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI):

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Master's Degree or Ph. D. that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position (typically a degree in the field of Chemistry).

In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement listed above, qualification for the GS-1701-11 position is:
GS-11 grade level:
one year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least GS-09 grade level OR education with a Master's Degree (in the field of Chemistry) or higher.

  • Specialized Experience: Experience performing duties such as: serving as a full-time Instructor in a college or equivalent education institution developing, researching, and administering course syllabi, materials, labs and activities; delivering lectures and presentations; and evaluating students' progress on standards based approach; collaborated with faculty on maintaining accreditation requirements; developed culturally relevant material; served on or chaired numerous committees which dealt with issues such as curriculum (all subject areas), goals and objectives, standardized testing, staff selection, policy and negotiations.

CTAP/ICTAP: Department of the Interior (DOI) Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) procedures apply in filling this vacancy. 5 CFR 330, Career Transition Assistance for Surplus and Displaced Federal Employees requires the following order of selection for this position:
