Duties

Help

This position will allow you to use your expertise in warehouse, forklift and inventory services to CBP. This position starts at a salary of $17.16 per hour (WG-06, Step 1) to $20.01 per hour (WG-06, Step 5) with promotion potential to $20.01 per hour (WG-6 Step 05).

Your duties will include:

  • Packing, unpacking, sorting, stacking warehouse bins and moving items;
  • Maintaining stocking and inventory and entering and maintaining an automated inventory system;
  • Determining material hold locations most suitable for assembling each shipment as well as locating trucks and other conveyances to transport materials;
  • Performing routine inspection checks for any freight damages and promptly reporting to contractor for immediate action;
  • Operating trucks from ½ ton to less than 4-ton capacity to transport equipment and materials assuring that cargo is property loaded, distributed, and secured;

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

To minimally qualify for the WG-06 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element: Can you perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, you should haveexperience performing the following duties:

  • Receiving, storing, assembling for issue or shipment;
  • Shipping a variety of supplies and materials, and equipment;
  • Processing material into and out of a supply system, including tallying items against shipping documents;
  • Palletizing, stacking, and otherwise placing and arranging items in storage locations in consideration of their size, weight, quantity, type, stock number and other factors.
Failure to meet this Screen out Element/s will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas:
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to organize and arrange stock in the storage area, conduct and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Knowledge of IBM compatible computer systems
  • Ability to determine program needs after analyzing information
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must:

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency wavier by meeting one or more of the following conditions:
  • Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
  • A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government
  • Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university
  • Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government
Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.

Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) Eligibles: If you have never worked for the Federal Government, you are not CTAP/ICTAP eligible. Physical and Environmental Conditions: You will work on hard surfaces and in work areas that require standing, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. You will frequently lift and carry supplies, materials, and equipment that weigh up to 70 pounds. You may occasionally handle items that weigh over 70 pounds and work around hazardous material.

Warehousing work is performed inside and outside. You may work in areas that are hot, cold, damp, drafty, poorly lighted. You may work in bad weather in such outside areas as open docks and storage yards. The work may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. You will be frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, falls or injury from falling objects, collisions, shifting loads, overturning, mechanical conveyor systems or other material handling equipment.

Motor Vehicle Operation: You must possess a valid state driver's license at the time of appointment.
