Summary

The primary purpose of this position is: as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) to gain experience and training to become a qualified Navigator in the unit type aircraft. Position also accomplishes a variety of administration duties related to flight/mission accomplishment such as scheduling, AFRC operational training, and mission management. Upon completion of training requirements, satisfaction of time-in-grade requirements the incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted to the grade level of GS-11

  • Preferred Military AFSC and Grade:
  • Position may or will require incumbent to Fly in military and/or commercial aircraft in the performance of temporary duty (TDY) assignments
  • Required to meet and maintain Air Force Reserve requirements. Incumbent's regular assignments are primarily ART duties: however, the incumbent may be assigned some non-ART duties, generally not to exceed 30 percent of total responsibilities
  • Position may require a background security investigation to determine suitability for employment and/or a security clearance
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance level
  • This position had been identified as a drug testing position. The incumbent of this position may be selected for random drug testing and be subject to reasonable suspicion testing and safety mishap or accident tests.
  • This position is designated as a mobility position. The incumbent must be willing to move/transfer to another unit/location on a lateral or promotion basis as directed by HQ AFRC (Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command)
  • Aircrew and management duties may include stress (mental/physical), exposures to extreme hot and cold temperatures, gravity forces of three in non-fighters and seven in fighters
  • Short notification tasks for accomplishment of immediate action items directed by the unit supervisors/higher headquarters that must be completed before the end of day.
  • Must be rated Navigator on flying status in unit to which assigned. Must participate in regular and frequent flights as required by the commander. Must pass physical examination and meet annual flying requirements.
  • Periodically, as prescribed by regulations, must take and pass standardization/evaluation examinations which consist of both written tests and actual flight performance to demonstrate flight knowledge and abilities required of the position.
  • GS-11: This is a key management position in which the incumbent is required to formulate, determine or influence policies of the assigned units
  • GS-11: Member will be considered for instructor upgrade training when qualified with gaining MAJCOM training regulations and any other applicable statutory requirements.
  • THIS IS A TERM POSITION NOT TO EXCEED FOUR (4) YEARS. THIS POSITION MAY BE CONVERTED TO CAREER OR CAREER CONDITIONAL WITHOUT FURTHER COMPETITION

Qualifications

Basic Requirement GS-2183:
Certificates and Ratings: To qualify, applicants must have been awarded or qualify for a United States Air Force Navigator or Combat Systems Officer rating and hold a valid aviation service aeronautical order. (NOTE: You must submit your certifications/order at the time of your application in order to be verify qualifications).

Additional Requirements GS-2183:
GS-09: Must be an undergraduate navigator trainee (UNT) graduate.
GS-11: A Minimum of 300 Total Military Flight Time in Mission Design Series (MDS). (You must submit a copy of official orders, forms, and/or logbooks time of your application in order to be verify Flight hours.)

NOTE:
Flying hours logged as student pilot and simulator are creditable. Flying hours in fighter/training aircraft will be given two-for-one credit by the examining office (Student hours will not be doubled).

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Reserve units and members; are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency. For additional information regarding ART positions and/or military qualifications, please call 1-800-257-1212. Retired military are usually ineligible for membership in the AF Reserve. Retired military that have active AF Reserve assignments may apply provided they show assignment (position) on the application. A military service member's statement of service/certification will be accepted IF a terminal leave form or DD214 cannot be provided. The statement/certification should indicate member's separation from active duty is within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement. It must be signed by, or by direction of, the adjutant, personnel officer, or commander of your unit or higher headquarters and must indicate when your terminal leave will begin, your rank, dates of active duty service, the type of discharge and character of service (i.e. honorable). Your preference and/or appointment eligibility will be verified prior to appointment. Military members may be appointed before the effective date of their military retirement/separation if member is on terminal leave.

Individuals selected for ART positions must meet both civilian qualifications and uniformed military requirements. In addition to meeting civilian qualifications, applicants must obtain military membership in the Air Force Reserve, wear the uniform, maintain job-specific military specialty requirements, and meet other military qualifications such as age, height, weight, and physical fitness standards. Additional information
