Summary

The Chief, Psychiatry is responsible for clinical operations relative to the Psychiatry Services within the Alaska VA Healthcare System (AKVAHCS). The Chief, Psychiatry provides discipline specific leadership and supervision, either directly or indirectly, to providers of Mental Health Medications/Psychiatric staff. The Chief, Psychiatry must maintain clinical privileges and clinical competencies by providing psychiatric services at some or all of the AKVAHCS care sites as part of their duties.

Major duties and responsibilities include:

  • The individual must possess the interpersonal and clinical skills to provide primary mental health care for VA patients 50% of total available clinic time (.50) or 20 hours per week.
  • Conduct history, physical exams and mental status exams on assigned patients.
  • Complete intake assessments and formulates diagnosis.
  • Develop and present treatment plans to the multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Order all necessary laboratory and radiological assessments.
  • Initiate consults and referrals as indicated.
  • Provide psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy as indicated in the treatment plan.
  • Maintain effective and up-to-date documentation of patient encounters.
  • May require maintaining credentials and privileges at the Joint Venture Hospital.
  • Oversee/Perform psychiatry on-call duties as needed.
  • Participate in professional and administrative activities as assigned.
  • Flexible and able to develop and supervise teams and programs, ensures effective communication both within the services they oversee and with other clinical services and administrative and support services external to them.
  • Ensure that all Physicians/Nurse Practitioners coordinate psychosocial evaluation, assessment, and periodic reassessments of Veterans for appropriate placement along the Mental Health continuum of care.
  • Coordinate provision of Veteran care needs ensuring fluidity of care is provided by
  • Psychiatric team members to and from Primary Care, Specialty Mental Health Services, Integrated Mental Health Services, Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs and Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Programs (MHRRTP).
  • Coordinate provision of Veteran care needs ensuring fluidity of care is provided by Psychiatric team members to and from Primary Care, Specialty Mental Health Services, Integrated Mental Health Services, Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs and Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Programs (MHRRTP).
  • Participate in all National and VISN level calls/trainings etc. for Psychiatric care expectations, implementation and continued programming.
  • Provide reporting duties of all provisions of Psychiatric care outcomes, needs, expectations to ACOS of Mental Health, Mental Health Executive Meeting and other requests of Leadership team.
  • Support the Chief of Social and Behavioral Health and the ACOS of Mental Health in developing quality improvement and Personnel Practices to enhance service provision.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 08:00 am - 04:30 pm

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred: Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Moderate Carrying (15-44 lbs); Straight Pulling, Pushing, Reaching above shoulder; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing aid (permitted).

Education

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.
