Duties

Help
  • Conduct fire prevention inspections to assess and report deficiencies.
  • Perform building safety inspections to check fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and water supply systems.
  • Conduct visual checks of fire alarm reporting and protection systems to ensure integrity and operability.
  • Participate as a firefighter crew member to control and extinguish fires.
  • Perform fire prevention inspections in areas where fire hazards are expected to be encountered.
  • Perform fire protection inspections to determine the risk.
  • Perform general maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus and equipment to ensure it is readily available for use.
  • Operate a wide array of firefighting equipment to suppress fires.
  • Use a self-contained breathing apparatus to ensure safe breathing conditions in hazardous situations.
  • Conduct classes on fire prevention, fire safety, and fire extinguishment to educate personnel.
  • Conduct educational programs on fire prevention, detection, and suppression to support the community.
  • Conduct formal classroom training for fire marshals and building wardens on fire prevention and fire safety procedures to comply with requirements.
  • Demonstrate fire safety techniques to educate the public.
  • Identify hazards that increase the risk of fire and lead to potential loss of life or property.
  • Write inspection reports citing identified hazards and applicable code violations to require corrections by a specified date.
  • Respond as a member of a firefighting crew to all types of fires or other emergencies.
  • Review building plans for conformance with codes.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires the incumbent to participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • The incumbent will be required to work 60 hours per week (120 hours per pay period) and may include working weekends and holidays.
  • The position requires the incumbent to report to duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters and other emergency situation s as directed by the Fire Chief
  • and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends, i.e., mandatory overtime, subject to recall to duty.
  • The position requires the incumbent to maintain a functioning telephone at their residence to aid and in contact during recall and/or emergency situations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle.
  • An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is require as well an Emergency Vehicle Operation certification to operate all vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and license/certification requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience performing fire prevention inspections of any of the following: structures, facilities, airfields and areas of the installation..This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

In addition to specialized experience, you must have the specific license and certificates listed below:
This position requires specific license and certifications by the Department of Defense Fire and Emergency Services Certification System; International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC); or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board) as outlined above (Firefighter I and II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I and II, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Airport Firefighter).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
