Duties

Help
  • You will determine the malfunction, best repair methods, repair and/or overhaul of faulty components in various systems of heavy equipment.
  • You will utilize a variety of specialized test equipment and tools such as computer diagnostic testers, emission and ignition analyzers, dynamometers, tachometers, torque wrenches, brake tools, and gear pullovers.
  • You will ensure that work assignments for other workers are performed as directed by the supervisor.
  • You will provide a demonstration of proper work methods, set the pace of work, and explain any procedures, policies, and instructions asked by workers.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform the work of a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER, WL-5803-11 without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by performing the following tasks: 1. Providing maintenance services on heavy trucks and/or equipment. 2. Performing engine overhauls on all types of internal combustion and alternate-fuel powered equipment. 3. Installing components (e.g., pistons, valves, bearings, gears) and using precision measuring devices (e.g., micrometers, dial indicators, compression gauges, distortion gauges, and injection gauges). 4. Operating specialized test equipment and tools such as: computer diagnostic testers, emission and engine analyzers, and dynamometers.

This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

A 40-hour work week is typical for this position.

This position requires overtime, evenings and/or weekend work hours.

Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Must be physically fit and be able to stand for long periods, kneel, bend, crouch, pull, push, climb, and lift objects weighing up to 40 lbs. Utilizes assistance from other workers to lift heavier objects. Is required to work at high elevations. The normal use of hands, arms, and legs is required. Normal vision and hearing with or without corrective devices is required. The incumbent works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods while standing, lying, or sitting.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is indoors and outdoors. Exposure to extreme weather, muddy or wet conditions, wind drafts, changing temperature, noise, vibrations, poor illumination, grease, oils, fuels, solvents, dirt, dust and fumes are normal. Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, bruise, burns, skin irritation, and sprains while repairing, positioning, or moving equipment.
