Summary

About the Position: Performs maintenance, repair, and warehousing of ammunition and explosives as directed by the Supervisor.

About the Location: Fairbanks is host to many different cultures; unique shopping and dining facilities as well as sporting activities. Population is about 87,000. Winter brings consistent snow conditions from November through March. Winter temperatures average 8 degrees F to -19 degrees F; summer temperatures rise into the 70s and 80s.

Duties

Help
  • Load, unload, stack, palletize and store ammunition and explosive material into storage areas, trucks, trailers, etc., IAW SOPs, TMs, regulations, drawings, and safety standards.
  • Follow regulations applicable to receipt inspection, packing, storage, or shipment of ammunition and explosive or hazardous material items.
  • Perform warehousing and re-warehousing of ammunition and explosive materials.
  • Execute maintenance operations to modify or preserve munitions.
  • Perform issue and turn-in of ammunition, explosives and component items in accordance with established regulations.
  • Operate trucks to deliver and/or pick up ammunition from various Alaskan locations.

  • Must obtain and maintain all applicable Commercial Driver?s License (CDL) Class B and government Commercial Military Vehicle (CMV) license with special endorsements/certifications for hazardous materials within 60 days of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET clearance.
  • The incumbent of this test-designated position is subject to random drug testing on an unannounced basis as a condition of employment under the Expanded Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Civilian Drug Testing Program.
  • The position is subject to the terms and conditions of the Lautenberg Amendment. The incumbent of this position is required to ship, to transport in interstate or foreign commerce and/or to possess or receive firearms and ammunition.
  • The incumbent is required to sustain Transportation of Hazardous Material certification IAW DTR DOD Reg 4500.9-R- Part II, Chapter 204, paragraph D.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain training certification IAW AMCR 350-4, Training and Certification Program for Personnel Working in Ammunition Operations.
  • Pre-employment physical is required
  • Position requires the lifting of items weighting up to 75 lbs

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Explosives Operator (Material Handler/Fork Lift Operator) without more than normal supervision includes packaging, inspecting, and shipment of ammunition and/or explosive materials; ensuring compliance with established ammunition handling policies and procedures - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Incumbent frequently lifts ammunition, explosives or related items weighing 30 to 90 pounds. Some assignments require lifts above 60 pounds at a production pace. Incumbent may pull/push hand trucks weighing several hundred pounds. The work requires sitting, walking, bending, reaching, crouching, climbing or long periods of standing. Needs endurance and good eye-hand coordination to work at a set pace and rhythm for extended periods of time.
  • Working Conditions: Performs duties in warm, well-lighted rooms, as well as outside in harsh, sometimes extreme conditions or in buildings with little or no light and heat. Workers must stand on floors of concrete or conductive composition. Incumbent wears protective clothing such as treated coveralls, respirators, protective masks, and/or goggles on many assignments. They face exposure to fumes from cleaning compounds and explosives plus possible exposure to an explosion or flash fire. There is a chance of injury ranging from burns, cuts, scrapes, bruises, sprains, nausea, to loss of life or limb.
