Duties

Help
  • Serve as the Machinist in the Maintenance Support Unit
  • Manufactures parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock of different kinds of metals and metal alloys and other materials
  • Carries out assignments which require special adaptation and extension of the use of conventional machine tools, and the use of specialized and non-conventional machine tools
  • Plans and lays out work, sets up and operates machine tools, and performs bench and assembly work, both at shop and field locations as necessary, appropriate, and possible
  • Drives Government vehicle to travel to and from worksites, and travels on public roads and highways in various types of weather

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Machinist~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common machining duties. I can 1) planning and laying out work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, and oral instructions; AND 2) applying shop mathematics to establish precise dimensions, formulas, pitch, or angles; AND 3) performing machining work using computer-controlled or mechanically-controlled machine tools. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort - Majority of work requires light to moderate physical effort in the handling of equipment and tools. While working with machine tools, may stand on concrete floors for prolonged periods of time and is required to stand, stoop, bend, and reach. On occasion, may be required to lift and carry items or materials weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Working Conditions - Works in a well-lighted, heated, and ventilated shop with concrete floors. Exposed to dust from grinding, oil from machines, dirt, heat, noises, and fumes. Subject to the hazards of burns from hot metal chips, dust in the lungs, cuts, bruises, injuries to hands from the use of machine and hand tools, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, abrasive compounds, and to strains from infrequent moving, lifting, and handling of heavy items. Wears safety glasses, safety shoes, and other safety apparel and equipment as required. During field assignments, works outdoors or inside, subject to a variety of weather conditions, occasionally cramped quarters, etc.
