This position is located within the Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), Auke Bay Laboratories (ABL) Division with one vacancy in Juneau, AK.
As a Research Chemist, you will perform the following duties:
Plan and perform research in marine nutritional ecology as an independent analyst, which may include sample preparation, extraction, derivatization and cleanup, physical measurements, laboratory tests, and instrumental analyses and maintenance.
Lead the Recruitment Energetics and Coastal Assessment (RECA) Chemistry Laboratory in the research of lipids, fatty acids, proximate composition, RNA:DNA ratios and nutrients.
Use chemical analytical techniques and maintaining equipment associated with gas and liquid chromatography, photospectometry and mass spectrometry.
Communicate research results through peer-reviewed publications and technical reports.
Comply with laboratory policies and procedures to ensure proper laboratory techniques are applied and a safe work environment is maintained.
Required to pass a background investigation and fingerprint check.
Must be suitable for Federal employment.
Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable (www.sss.gov)

Monster Government Solutions (MGS) will be performing scheduled maintenance on January 9th. The scheduled maintenance will begin at 12:01 a.m. ET on January 9th and end at 11:59 p.m. ET on January 9th. You may not be able to complete the application process during these time.
This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel System (CAPS). This system replaced the Federal GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan, and pay band. The ZP-3 is equivalent to the GS-11/12.
The full performance level of the position is ZP-3 or GS-11/12.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: This position has a positive Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of Specialized Experience OR substitution of education for experience OR combination (if applicable) in order to be found minimally qualified. EDUCATION:
To qualify for the 1320 series:
A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify at the ZP-3 or GS-11:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting one of the Basic Requirements above, applicants must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-09 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following:
Assisting in the chemical analysis of nutritional research in ecology or agricultural sciences;
Supporting lab quality and safety requirements, and/or hazardous materials and waste policies; and
Contributing to reports summarizing research findings.
OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience.
NOTE: Only graduate education in excess of one year is qualifying for combination.
