The Nurse (Emergency Room) positions are located at Acomita and Zuni, New Mexico, Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service. The incumbent provides registered nursing care in the emergency room/urgent care department by assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of all assigned patients with medical, surgical, pediatrics, ambulatory or emergency conditions and reports directly to the Supervisory Nurse.

Help

  • Collaborate with other health care professionals and service providers to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Provide consultation to other health care providers in areas such as patient discharge, patient care, or clinical procedures.
  • Develop or assist others in development of care and treatment plans.
  • Develop and maintain departmental policies, procedures, objectives, or patient care standards, based on evidence-based practice guidelines or expert opinion.
  • Read current literature, talk with colleagues, or participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in nursing.
  • Plan, evaluate, or modify treatment programs, based on information gathered by observing and interviewing patients or by analyzing patient records.
  • Monitor or evaluate medical conditions of patients in collaboration with other health care professionals.
  • Maintain departmental policies, procedures, objectives, or infection control standards.
  • Present patients with information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
  • Perform discharge planning for patients.
  • Participate in clinical quality assurance activities, such as reviewing patient records, monitoring compliance, and meeting with regulatory authorities.
  • Observe, interview, and assess patients to identify care needs.
  • Write nursing orders.
  • Teach patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
  • Prepare reports to document patients' care activities.
  • Provide direct care by performing comprehensive health assessments, developing differential diagnoses, conducting specialized tests, or prescribing medications or treatments.

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Upon tentative selection, selectee will be requested to complete, sign, and submit the Addendum to OF-306, Child Care & Indian Child Care Worker Position form. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

On-call hours and work schedules other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays may be required to provide continuity of service.

A current unrestricted driver's license is required for the position.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: providing nursing care, triaging patients, recognizing and intervening in acute life-threatening situations, cardiac and respiratory failure management in emergency room; interpreting data about the patient's status in order to identify the patient care needed; skilled in operating specialized equipment; independently planning, scheduling and providing comprehensive nursing care in the Emergency Department/Urgent Care.

GS-10 Grade Level:

  • One full year of specialized Nurse (Emergency Room) experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level.
To be creditable, specialized experience must be directly related to the specialty area and provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain licensure requirements. If licensure is not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.
