Summary

One position is located in the Women's and Infant Service Line (WISL) and one position in the Integrated Surgical Services (OR). Incumbent is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Functions as the primary scrub tech responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures. Position reports to the Supervisory Clinical Nurse.

Help

  • Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure in the operating room.
  • Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and ensures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedures.
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains highly complex sterile surgical set-ups.
  • Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended period of time.

Security Clearance: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

The selected individual is required to maintain certification as a Surgical Technician.

Position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

One year specialized experience equivalent to at least next lower grade level;
OR
One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7

Individual Occupation Requirements - Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrist. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, your specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Providing assistance to surgeons during a variety of procedures (i.e., handle surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment); set up sterile fields with required items for each surgical procedures such as air-powered equipment, fiber-optic equipment, laparoscopy equipment, etc.; handle surgical specimens appropriately; train new operating room staff in the operation of equipment, sterile techniques, handling of instruments or procedures.

Graduate Education: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

Selective Placement Factor: Selective factors must represent knowledge, skills or abilities that are essential for successful job performance and cannot reasonably be acquired on the job during the period of orientation/training customary for the position being filled. Failure to meet this factor will result in the loss of consideration. You must submit a copy of your certification with your application.

Applicants must have a current, unrestricted certification as a Surgical Technician or Technologist from ONE of the following programs:

  • National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistant (NBSTSA)
  • Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP)
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
