U.S. Citizens

At the entry level of this position, you will:

• Perform work to determine whether or not a wetland and/or tributary are waters of the U.S. Reviews and comments on jurisdictional determinations (JDs) submitted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
• Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with colleagues, agency management and other contacts outside the agency to gain information and corroboration on findings.  Write study proposals, project plans, scientific and technical papers, publications.
• Apply hydrologic concepts and assess impacts of land uses on wetlands and tributaries.  Perform work to predict the delivery of pollutants from point and non-point sources within a watershed and to link these predicted pollutant loadings to the condition of a water body and to downstream waters.
• Accomplish duties related to environmental management and/or protection.

When entering a Federal job at a grade level lower than the highest promotion potential level, you may be promoted to more complex duties and work more independently, as your career progresses.

This position is designated as Low Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

Hydrologist 1315

Bachelor's Degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels. OR

Combination of education and experience.  Evaluation of Experience: Acceptable experience must have included performance of scientific functions related to the study of water resources, based on and requiring a professional knowledge of related sciences and the consistent application of basic scientific principles to the solution of theoretical and practical hydrologic problems. The following is illustrative of acceptable experience: field or laboratory work that would require application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geo-chemistry, geophysics, or civil engineering to making observations, taking samples, operating instruments, assembling data from source materials, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some cases, professional scientific experience that is not clearly water resource experience may be acceptable if such experience was preceded by appropriate education in hydrology or by professional hydrology experience.

Environmental Scientist 1301

Bachelor's Degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
