Summary

This position is in NASA's Agency Pathways Intern Program (Track A) which provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA's three human space flight centers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. The individuals assigned to this position will perform duties of a developmental nature, with oversight and guidance from experienced engineers in the organization. The interns will perform basic engineering duties based on their academic study.

Duties

Help
  • As a Pathways Intern, you will assist engineering professionals in non-routine and progressively responsible duties which are directly related to engineering in support of human space flight.
  • Receive on the job training in the operations of the organization including pertinent policies, rules and regulations.
  • Assignments may include, but are not limited to research, development, design, test, evaluation of engineering projects.
  • Work to develop the experience needed to work more independently and on more complex tasks during follow-on training periods.
  • Request clarifications, asks questions, seeks information and advice, and otherwise absorbs the training provided in order to increase knowledge and understanding of the organization and its activities.

Qualifications

Starting GS grade levels are determined by education level:

GS-05: Enrolled in a certificate program or bachelor's degree program and have completed at least 60 semester hours or at least 90 quarter hours of undergraduate education.

You must have an expected degree program completion date of May 1, 2020, or later to be eligible for this position. In the NASA Supplemental Questionnaire you will be asked, "What is the expected completion date for the degree you are currently pursuing or plan to pursue?" The date you enter will be used to determine your eligibility, and applicants who indicate a date prior to May 1, 2020 will be found ineligible.

Education

To be eligible for this position, you must be pursuing a degree in engineering, physical science,
mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science at an accredited educational
institution. For non-engineering degrees, to find out if your college/university is accredited, visit the Department of Education website.
For engineering degrees, the degree you are pursuing must be from a college or university school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional
engineering curriculum. To find out if a degree meets this requirement, visit ABET.

Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying.

The following majors are preferred: Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Engineering or Computer Science.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. IF YOU ARE SELECTED, YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ROTATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS AT ALL THREE OF THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS: MARSHALL SPACE FLIGHT CENTER (HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA), JOHNSON SPACE CENTER (HOUSTON, TEXAS), KENNEDY SPACE CENTER (TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA). ADDITIONALLY, THIS POSITION REQUIRES YOU TO WORK A SPECIFIC SCHEDULES SUCH AS ONE SEMESTER AT SCHOOL FOLLOWED BY ONE SEMESTER WORKING AT NASA.

You must be able to work a minimum of three work tours prior to graduation. Work tours are defined as semesters/quarters. You will be expected to work the following schedule: Work tour #1 Summer 2019, Work tour #2 Fall 2019 or Spring 2020, Work tour #3 Summer 2020.

If selected, you are expected to report for duty May 28, 2019.

Position subject to pre-employment background investigation.

If hired, you may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed.

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment.

Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completing degree requirements provided they:

  • Successfully completed an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale);
  • Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience before completing degree requirements;
  • Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and
  • Maintain acceptable performance.
Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion. At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If an Intern is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing.

If you are hired and successfully complete your internship, you may be converted to a Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Engineer position with promotion potential to the GS-13 level.
