As an Operations Research Analyst Intern you will perform analytical and computational duties involving basic principles of basic principles of statistics, numerical analysis and operations research and you will work as a member of one of Volpe’s organizational teams. The ideal candidate for this position is pursuing a degree in operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, logic, science, or related fields. Candidates will gain experience in using analytical and communication skills to select and modify appropriate methods of operation, analyze results, and prepare reports. Projects may involve fuel economy, discrete choice analysis, automotive supply chain/market data and analysis, aviation systems, telecommunications, and/or navigation/surveillance systems.

The required education must lead to a degree in Operations Research, Mathematics, Statistics, or Economics or related and include at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics.
At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must be in calculus. The following is a list of acceptable courses: optimization; mathematical modeling; queuing theory; engineering; econometrics; psychometrics; biometrics; experimental psychology; physical chemistry; industrial process analysis; managerial economics; computer science; measurement for management; mathematical models in social phenomena; and courses that involved application of operations research techniques and methodologies to problems of management, marketing, systems design, and other specialized fields; or other comparable quantitative analysis courses for which college level mathematics or statistics is a prerequisite.
GS-3: Completion of one academic year post-high school study.
GS-4: Completion of two academic years of post-high school study; OR associate’s degree.
GS-5: Completion of four academic years post-high school study leading to a bachelor’s degree; OR bachelor’s degree.
GS-7: Completion of one academic year of graduate level education; OR bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement as defined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Operating Manual for Qualification Standards; OR five academic years of pre-professional study.
GS-9: A Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or A LL.B. or J.D., if related.

- All applicants are required to provide proof of current student enrollment such as a current/fall 2018 unofficial transcript (undergraduate, graduate, etc.) or a letter from a school official (e.g. registrar, advisor, etc.) by the closing date of the advertisement or will be disqualified from further consideration.
- All applicants invited to an interview will be required to bring documentation of enrollment in the spring 2019 semester/quarter.
- All applicants must have at least 1 year remaining in their studies before they complete their current degree requirements or must enroll in another qualifying degree program upon completion of current requirements.
- Students graduating before March 1, 2019 must provide proof of continued education in the next semester/quarter (e.g. letter of application or acceptance, etc.) with their application or will be disqualified from further consideration.
- Students graduating before September 1, 2019 may apply but will be required to provide documentation of application or acceptance for future enrollment in another qualifying degree program if invited for an interview.
- If selected, you will be required to provide Official transcripts.
- If selected, you must periodically provide transcripts and/or letter from the school stating you are enrolled in a degree/certificate program on at least a half time basis in good standing and your expected graduation date.
- You may include multiple transcripts/letters; please ensure all documentation is legible.

This is a temporary internship to complete project work that is temporary in nature. The appointment is not-to-exceed September 28, 2019, and can be extended without further competition to a new temporary appointment or an appointment without a not-to-exceed date at management’s discretion based on the need of the organization for the work to continue and provided the employee remains eligible for employment in the Pathways Intern Program.
Upon graduation and completion of program requirements you may be non-competitively converted, without a break in service, to a term (time-limited), career, or career conditional (permanent) appointment in the federal government with a GS-12 full performance level, such as an Operations Research Analyst. Grade level upon conversion will be determined by management and neither conversion nor promotion under this Program is guaranteed.

Internships are expected to begin in May 2019, however, applications will be accepted for a limited number of positions available as early as January 2019.
If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
Interns may work full-time during the summer and a flexible part-time work schedule during the school year (based on agency needs) while continuing their education.
You will be in a trial period throughout your entire Pathways Internship appointment.
This is an Excepted Service appointment. As part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee’s educational program requirements have been completed.
