This vacancy announcement is being used to fill multiple intern positions throughout the USPTO.  As a Student Intern, you will work with higher graded staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience that augments training in an academic course of study. 

This is a 12 week summer intern program.      

Office of the Commissioner for Patent (Patent Examiner Interns Only)

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching and reviewing of various programs
  • Briefing management officials on content
  • Devising advertisement strategies
  • Drafting policy, proposing outreach strategies
  • Participating in outreach activities

All other USPTO Business Offices:  The Office of the Under Secretary (OUS), Office of the Commissioner for Patent (Patent – all other positions), Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO), Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (OCAO), Office of the General Counsel (OGC) , Office of the Chief Communications Officer (OCCO), Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), Office of Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity, Office of Policy and International Affairs (OPIA), and the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO).

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Researching materials and preparing information
  • Benchmarking other agencies and private industry companies
  • Participating in group/team assignments
  • Assisting with special projects and new initiatives
  • Managing databases and inputting information
  • Review and analyzing information
  • Drafting various documents and reports
  • Creating electronic and hard copy case files, maintaining files
  • Communicating with customers via phone, e-mail and/or face- to-face
  • Assisting in preparing for a variety of training classes
  • Attending meetings
  • Designing various strategies and presentations
  • Assisting with redesigning business process improvement activities
  • Testing various software and systems
  • Creating spreadsheets/charts, etc. using a variety of data sources and information
  • Assisting in preparing for and observing hearings, cases, panels, interviews, and documenting results
  • Proposing outreach strategies

A student enrolled in high school or enrolled as a degree-seeking student in a qualifying educational institution.  

Qualifications

You must meet the United States Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) qualification requirements (including specialized experience and/or educational requirements) for the advertised position. You must meet all eligibility and qualifications requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. Specialized Experience: is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service.

Candidates for the GS-05 grade level must have at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service.  Specialized experience for this position includes: performing a range of clerical duties (such as:  typing, filing, answering routine customer questions, compiling data, preparing or making changes to documents and/or forms, preparing/formatting charts/graphs/reports), or assisting higher level employees with monitoring/updating status and conducting basic research. 

OR

Candidates can substitute specialized experience by possessing 4 years of completed education above high school.  

OR

Candidates can combine education and experience only if education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.  One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.    

General Experience: is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. 

Candidates for the GS-04 grade level must have at least 1 year of general experience.

Candidates can substitute general experience by possessing 2 years of education above high school.  

OR

Candidates can combine education and experience converting the two into percentages to ensure qualifications are met. 

Candidates for the GS-03 grade level must have at least 6 months of general experience.  

OR

Candidates can substitute general experience by possessing 1 year of education above high school.  

OR

Candidates can combine education and experience converting the two into percentages to ensure qualifications are met. 

Candidates for the GS-02 grade level must have at least 3 months of general experience.

Candidates can substitute general experience by possessing a high school diploma or equivalent.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and/or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education: To qualify based on education, you must submit copy of transcripts which include course listings, major(s), and grade point average or class ranking. You must be enrolled in an accredited school and taking at least a half-time academic course load. The definition of half-time is the definition provided by the school in which you are enrolled.

Special Instructions for Foreign Education: Qualifying education from colleges and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities. Applicants educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work and degree. A listing of these accredited organizations can be found on the Department of Education's website - US Department of Education. Another listing of services that an perform this evaluation is available at the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).  You must provide a copy of the letter containing the results of the equivalency evaluation with a course by course listing along with your application. Failure to provide such documentation when requested will result in lost consideration.

NOTE: Only education and experience acquired before the filing deadline will be considered.  Report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
