As Research Astrophysicist, specializing in Fields and Particles, you will conduct research into determining the nature/magnitude/interrelationship of atmospheric and space-plasma properties and flows, waves and tides, neutral winds, electromagnetic field and wave properties, and inter-hemispheric and vertical coupling between atmospheric regions through theoretical and computational means.

Research work involves applying the scientific method to tackle key unsolved problems in heliophysics, with specific focus on the Ionosphere/Thermosphere/ Mesosphere (ITM) system, by defining problems, planning and implementing the appropriate approach, developing and utilizing state-of-the-art models, validating through comparison with Earth's upper atmosphere and ionosphere observations, interpreting results, and documenting findings. Specifically, the incumbent performs presentable/publishable cutting-edge research, as defined by the ITM community; reviews the studies of others for completeness, feasibility, and applicability; and serves as a top technical expert, adviser, and consultant on a national level.

You will lead and perform research in critical unsolved problems related to the time-dependent ITM evolution. This research is performed by developing/modifying and implementing one or more state-of-the-art physics-based numerical models of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere, including the internal dynamics, forcing by the neutral atmosphere and solar irradiation, and coupling to the magnetosphere. You will exhibit a deep understanding of numerical simulation and data assimilation methods that can be best used to model the full time-dependent evolution of part or all of the ITM system. Produce scientific advancements through comparison of model results with satellite and ground-based measurements, from previous, ongoing, and future NASA missions.

You will lead and perform research and development for next-generation space environment models, to advance understanding of the coupled ITM system response to space weather events and to improve space environment specification and forecasting capabilities. Collaborate with CCMC model providers to acquire, install, and test new and updated ITM models and coupled modeling systems. Maintain access to CCMC-hosted ITM models, and provide expert science support to CCMC users to ensure appropriate model utilization and optimal scientific return. Collaborate with NASA's users of ITM space environment information to quantify uncertainties in satellite position determination due to space weather events and to enable improvements in satellite tracking. Perform extensive assessments of ITM model performance using archival and new mission data sets. Provide modeling support to missions to maximize science returns and facilitate new mission planning. Define requirements, resolve scientific and project development issues, and develop plans for timely completion of projects. Initiate and coordinate collaborations with pertinent agencies such as NSF, NOAA, and DoD.

Lead and support investigations in problem areas recognized as critical obstacles to scientific progress, and pioneering projects of outstanding scope and difficulty. Utilize theory and numerical simulations to develop, review, and provide recommendations for proposed mission and project requirements, instrument design and development requirements, science objectives, expected results, and budgetary estimates. Provide expert guidance to management for strategic planning and program development.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-13 grade level, applicants must have one year specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-12) defined as applying physics-based computer models to fundamental problems in heliophysics or plasma physics; conducting theoretical research in the physics of atmospheric gases and plasmas; and communicating research results at meetings and in peer-reviewed journals.

To qualify for the GS-14 grade level, applicants must have one year specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-13) defined as installing, testing, and validating physics-based computer models; developing or modifying and implementing one or more ITM models; conducting modeling and theoretical research in the physics of atmospheric gases and plasmas; and communicating research results at meetings and in peer-reviewed journals.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
