The Pathways Intern will assist in the various operational efforts to develop, implement, maintain, and monitor IT Security services within the Glenn Research Center that provide confidentiality, availability, and integrity to assure mission and project success. Perform entry-level incident response functions, such as: mitigation recommendations; forensic analysis; data decryption, backup, and recovery; incident reporting; statistical reports; and recommend follow-up actions to prevent future incidents. With the guidance and assistance of a mentor, assess baseline measures of networking and security performance and identify performance or security deficiencies and/or strengths in the current implementation. Assist in addressing the issues identified. Assist in identifying, managing, and protecting sensitive data applicably within the Center and Enterprise. Facilitate this data protection via processes and tools to implement the necessary capabilities.
Perform correlation and analysis of vulnerability scans and other relevant data to understand the security posture of the Center systems. Investigate and propose mechanisms to improve patching/configuration compliance and reduce risk to Center systems. Assist in the identification, creation, communication, and distribution of risk management or IT security policies to appropriately mitigate risks to the systems and data within the Center. Develop a working knowledge of the laws, policies, regulations, and guidelines covering the use of IT and data within the Federal environment, particularly NASA. Develop an understanding of the existing data sources and capabilities to assist in the coordination of responses to data calls and reporting requests.
Assist in the management and oversight of IT Security Projects. These projects may include: security operations, incident response, information protection, program protection, or networking projects. Assist with communications planning, organizational outreach, schedule monitoring and control as well as contractor or procurement surveillance. Assist the project leads in developing and providing an integrated standardized view of critical IT projects and their related cost, schedule, risk, and performance indicators. Develop an understanding of the ServiceNow tool and assist in leveraging the tools for service management and project management to support the IT Security office.
This position requires you to work a specific schedule such as one semester at school followed by one semester at NASA.
Pursuing a degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours completed.
Available to work at least 640 hours prior to completion of degree.
Expected completion date at least 1 year from date of appointment.
Pathways candidates must be pursuing a master's degree or higher.

To be eligible for this position, you must: • Be a U.S. citizen. • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment. • Be enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in an accredited educational institution. • Be enrolled at least half-time as defined by your educational institution. • Have and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.90 (on a 4.00 scale).
The grade level you qualify for is based on education:
GS-7/1 ($47,027 pa) - Completion of 4 academic years of study for a bachelor's degree and accepted into a master's program.
GS-9/1 ($56,226 pa) - Completion of 1 academic year of master's level education or acceptance into a Doctoral program. The GS-9 level is the full performance for graduate students.
GS-11/1 ($62,643 pa) - Completion of 1 year of doctorate level study. The GS-11 level is the full performance level for PhD students.
