Duties

Help

Implements safe and effective fitness programs ensuring diversity and appropriateness to meet individual needs and the needs of Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Provides leadership of program to Fitness and Sports program staff, volunteers and contractors. Manages and performs full supervisory function over Recreation Assistant (Fitness Sports Instructors) to include planning, directing, and controlling the work of subordinate employees. Implements health promotion and wellness programs for the installation and augments the program with own well-planned and beneficial programs to ensure diversity, appropriateness, and freshness and to respond to individual needs and the needs of the JBLE community. Sets up classes to be taught by others or self to instruct in circuit weight training and cardiovascular training. Conducts fitness classes based on customer demand (i.e. circuit weight training and cardiovascular training). Counsels individuals and groups on the importance of fitness and wellness programs and the adaptation to everyday life through personal contacts with structured programs. Provides and/or arranges for classes in such things as proper exercise techniques, proper use of equipment to prevent injuries, safety measures, aerobics, stretching, heart and blood pressure monitoring, nutrition, and weight management. Programs will include, at a minimum, group exercise classes, incentive programs, special events for all customers and fitness improvement programs for military members not meeting established military fitness and/or weight requirements. Understands proper layout of fitness equipment and advises on new procurement to meet standards and customer demands. Stays abreast of current trends in fitness equipment and delivery techniques. Responsible for security of all property, maintaining all property records, preparing all financial and administrative reports, budget inputs. Develops long term equipment replacement plan and recommends purchase of equipment and supplies which may require input from other fitness and sports staff. Provides budget input/information to Operations Managers and Fitness and Sports Director in support of Fitness programs and equipment. Walks the fitness rooms to ensure safe and effective training is conducted. Collects user fees in the form of cash and credit transactions, processes cash accountability paperwork; safeguards funds and equipment. Operates government vehicles in the course of daily duties. May be required to travel when performing temporary duty (TDY). Performs other duties as assigned. May be required to perform duties associated with Sports program as assigned by Fitness and Sports Director.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience: Possesses directly related work experience that includes the demonstrated ability in the delivery of safe and effective fitness programs. Experience must demonstrate skill in conducting fitness programs for a diverse population understanding the various health risks contained therein. Has the knowledge of and ability to apply the principles, methods and techniques in an individual or group setting. Successful completion of an undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field such as physical education or kinesiology may be substituted for some of the experience as determined by selecting official. Position requires Fitness Trainer Certification (National Strength and Conditioning Association; Cooper Institute of Aerobic Research, American Council on Exercise; American College of Sports Medicine). Certification in Specialized Program Instructor Areas, i.e., Individualized Fitness Assessment, Benefits of Exercise, and Group Exercise are also highly desirable. Must obtain certification in Adult CPR and First Aid within 30 days of appointment and maintain as current thereafter. Must be physically able to frequently lift and carry objects weighing 75 pounds or more. Must be able to continuously stand, bend, stoop, and reach for long periods of time. Must satisfactorily complete pre-employment physical. Must be able to satisfactorily complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI). Position requires current state drivers' license. "This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use."

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
