Duties

Help
  • Assists automotive mechanics in performance of maintenance and repair on all combustion powered vehicles.
  • Helps with repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, adjusting, or cleaning defective parts or components such as fouled spark plugs, worn brake shoes, water pumps, engine gaskets belts and hoses, etc.
  • Under the direct supervision of the automotive mechanic or higher grade worker, removes and replaces with standard parts, items such as spark plugs, fan belts, starters, carburetors, fuel pumps, water pumps, mufflers, tail pipes, etc.
  • Assists in making settings and adjustments such as setting distributor and voltage regulator points, gaping spark plugs, setting engine idle and time, and taking up on brakes.
  • Observes environmental, safety, and security rules and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Subject to satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks in accordance with AR 215-3, para.2.
  • Incumbent may also be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally-controlled facilities.
  • Usually works indoors on concrete surfaces. Occasionally works outside under adverse weather conditions.
  • Required to follow safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, and safety glasses and exercise proper handling of equipment and hazardous materials to avoid serious injury in the work area.
  • A driver's license is required.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate must possess the following:

1. Applicant must have completed high school or the equivalent in a trade school. Creditable job related experience may be substituted for the education requirement.
2. Must have 6 months of progressively general experience plus a minimum of 6 months of specialized experience in general automotive work.

Education

At a minimum a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required, unless you are substituting job-related experience for the education requirement.

Proof of education is required at the time of application.

All education documents must be in English or have a translated copy provided. You must upload a copy of your HS Diploma, HS Transcript (showing the completion date), GED certificate or proof of a college degree

Allowances and Differentials
  • This job falls under the Federal Wage Schedule (FWS) pay system. FWS employees earn overtime pay for working more than 8 hours in a day or more than 40 hours in a week - whichever gives the employee more benefit. Regular full-time, regular part-time, and regularly scheduled flexible employees may receive Sunday premium pay for working on Sundays. Employees may also be eligible to receive extra pay if the majority of their scheduled hours falls after 3:00 PM.
  • Foreign overseas allowances, post allowance, and differentials will not be paid.
