Summary

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a full range of vascular ultrasound procedures, including, but not limited to:
    • Arterial and venous duplex imaging
    • Transcranial Doppler (TCD)
    • Carotid, renal, abdominal, pelvic, chest, small parts and visceral vascular exams
    • Preoperative vein mapping and chronic venous insufficiency studies
  • Operate and adjust ultrasound equipment; ensure image quality and diagnostic accuracy
  • Assist with biopsies, fluid aspirations, and surgical procedures
  • Prepare and position patients, explain procedures, and ensure patient comfort
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare imaging for interpretation by radiologists
  • Recognize and differentiate imaging artifacts from pathology
This is a full-performance level position requiring advanced knowledge of vascular sonography. The technician is expected to work independently, make real-time decisions during procedures, and contribute significantly to diagnostic outcomes. The role covers multiple vascular systems (cerebral, peripheral, abdominal) and supports both inpatient and outpatient care.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm
Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

GS-8 Vascular Technician Qualifications

(a) Experience
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience comparable to the GS-7 level, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required for this grade.

(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Candidates must demonstrate all of the following:

  • Knowledge of cross-sectional and longitudinal vascular anatomy in normal and abnormal vessels, anatomical planes and tissue structures, physiologic effects of disease entities that impact the vascular system, signs and symptoms of acute and chronic vascular disease, and the characteristic appearance of:

    • Aneurysms
    • Pseudoaneurysms
    • Thromboses
    • Stenoses
    • Occlusions
    • AV fistulae
    • Atherosclerotic plaque morphology
  • Ability to provide Doppler information of peripheral vessels; demonstrate characteristic differences related to the organs they supply; accurately quantify carotid artery stenoses; and identify and correlate:

    • Waveform analysis
    • Plethysmographic tracings
    • Velocity changes
    • Pressure gradients
    • Characteristics of normal, obstructed, or occluded vessels or grafts
  • Ability to perform intracranial (transcranial) vascular examinations

  • Ability to operate instruments to extract the highest quality image using appropriate:

    • Transducer frequency
    • Doppler angle
    • Focal zones
    • Gain
    • Depth
    • Color map
    • Wall filter
    • Sample volume
  • Ability to provide objective data to document progression or regression of disease


(c) Certification:
  • Not required, but highly desirable:
    • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) - ARDMS
    • Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS) - CCI
    • BCLS/ACLS certifications are also desirable
