Help

Duties may include:

  • Performing both day and overnight wilderness, front country and/or climbing patrols.
  • Checking trails and wilderness campsite conditions.
  • Performing a variety of resource management and maintenance projects such as reporting significant resource damage and maintenance problems, assisting with wildlife issues, campsite restoration/construction projects, search and rescue response, etc.
  • Completing assigned resource related projects (i.e. wilderness campsite inventory, analysis and monitoring system, campsite rehabilitation, wilderness privy relocation and care, hazard tree analysis, minor trail work, fish census cards, etc.).
  • Assisting with evaluating wilderness conditions and restoring wilderness campsites in technically challenging fire recovery area.
  • Leading seasonal staff in field operations.
  • Some positions may staff visitor contact stations to provide information to park users on a variety of topics, assisting with trip planning, preventative search and rescue (PSAR), etc.
Area Information: Established on January 29, 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is a living showcase of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. The park embraces 415 square miles of pristine, uninhabited mountains in north-central Colorado and, as such, is one of the most spectacular, yet easily accessible high mountain areas in North America. With elevations ranging from 7,800 feet at park headquarters to 14,259 feet at the summit of Longs Peak, the park has glacier-sculptured valleys, rugged gorges, alpine lakes, and vast areas of alpine tundra. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved continuous road in the United States, stays above tree line for 11miles and reaches 12,183 feet in elevation. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, coyotes, and smaller animals are found throughout the park, as well as threatened and endangered species, such as the Greenback Cutthroat Trout and Boreal Toad. Due to the park's easy accessibility to the Front Range communities of Colorado, Rocky experiences over 4 million visitors annually. The nearest community on the east side of the park is Estes Park, CO. Employees duty stationed in Estes Park, CO will be under the Denver-Aurora-Boulder, CO locality pay table. The nearest community on the west side of the park is Grand Lake, CO. Employees duty stationed in Grand Lake, CO will be under the Rest of US locality pay table.

  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid state-issued driver's license.
  • These positions require certification to perform emergency medical response at the First Responder (e.g. Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness Emergency Medical Responder (WEMR), etc.) or higher level of certification.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/23/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: These positions perform Search and Rescue duties, and emergency medical response certification at the First Responder (e.g. Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness Emergency Medical Responder (WEMR), etc.) or higher level is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. - AND -

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

  • SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Park Ranger (Wilderness). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to the following: issuing wilderness permits, conducting backcountry/wilderness day or night patrols, disseminating information to promote responsible backcountry/wilderness use and safety, verifying compliance with regulations, promoting leave no trace and safe wilderness/backcountry use; performing search and rescue operations in a park, forest or wilderness setting, using search and rescue equipment such as wheeled litter, backboards or splints; maintenance and rehabilitation/restoration of wilderness campsites and facilities including privies, impact monitoring, and assisting with wildlife issues. You must provide hours per week worked on your resume. -OR-
  • EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level study in directly-related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. You must submit a copy of transcripts. -OR-
  • Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example: 6 months of specialized experience as described above may be combined with one-half year (9 semester hours) of graduate level college study in a directly-related field of study as described above to meet the qualifications requirements for the GS-7. You MUST submit a copy of transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.


Physical Demands: The incumbent must be in excellent physical condition, able to carry loads in excess of 50 pounds at the rateof1000 vertical feet per hour at elevations ranging up to 14,256 feet, and hike for distances of up to 20 miles per day. The work involves periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines carrying a backpack.

Work Environment: Most work is performed outdoors, at high altitudes, in a wide range of weather conditions (from 90 degrees F to -40 degrees). Regular and recurring exposure to moderate and sometimes severe discomfort is experienced. Work may be performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. The incumbent is frequently exposed to high risk and potentially dangerous situations, with the possibility of serious injury or accidental death.
