Summary

Applicant will be required to drive a truck up to 26,000 pounds in support of the Environmental Management Service within the Textile Care Processing Section at the VA Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS). Applicant will provide delivery and pickup of clean and soiled laundry linen, and uniforms at the GCVHCS, which is comprised of the main Biloxi campus and four outpatient clinics located at Mobile, Alabama, Pensacola Florida, Eglin AFB (Florida),and Panama City Beach Florida.

Major Duties:

  • Skilled in motor vehicle mechanics and interpretation of operator's manual for assigned vehicles.
  • Skilled in map reading in order to reach unfamiliar locations.
  • Ability to practice and promote safe work and driving habits and follow standard safety procedures, including identifying existing or potential safety hazards and promptly notifying supervisor and initiating corrective action as required.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment
  • Use two-way radio (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations, in accordance with rules and regulations
  • Vehicles are driven over roads and streets through various types of traffic and possible weather conditions.
  • Skilled in defensive driving techniques
  • Perform operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation.
Must possess a Mississippi State "D" Driver's License. Must have a good motor vehicle driving record, and be fully aware of the laws regarding the operation of motor vehicles in the State of Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Louisiana. Must have the ability to safely operate a truck of up to 26,000 pounds, possessing the ability to park, turn and backup these vehicles in awkward locations. Must have the knowledge to operate the hydraulic tailgate lift, and two way radio for communication.

Must have the basic skills and knowledge to perform operator maintenance on motor vehicles, to include, checking oil level, tire pressure, water level in radiator, transmission fluid level. Incumbent must have the ability to ascertain poor performance in a vehicle and report deficiencies to the supervisor. Must be able to read, speak, and comprehend the English language and have the ability to read road maps and follow directions

Work Schedule: M-F 6:00am-2:30pm ( subject to changed based on agency needs)

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/17/2025.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Required to load and unload laundry trucks which require pulling, pushing, and bending to move linen, laundry, sheets, and/or operating room clothing. which is loaded in carts weighing up to 750-pounds. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds while using appropriate body mechanics

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
